Live and Dead Syllables

Chapters
Chapter 9 of 32Page 1 of 5

Live or Dead?

Now you'll learn to work out a word's tone from its spelling! You need two clues. The first is the class of the first letter. The second is whether the syllable is live or dead.

A live syllable ends in a sound you can hold. A dead syllable stops short.

Live

Ends in a long vowel, or in ม, น, or ง.

Dead

Ends in a short vowel, or in ก, ด, or บ.

You'll meet two more live endings later.
