Athro dw i

Identifying Sentences: Athro Dw I

Level 2

Put the job or name first, then the verb: Athro dw i (I'm a teacher), Meddyg ydy hi (She's a doctor).

How It Works

Noun first, then bod

  • Athro dw i. I'm a teacher.
  • Myfyriwr wyt ti? Are you a student?
  • Meddyg ydy hi. She's a doctor. (South: Meddyg yw hi; North: Meddyg ydi hi)
  • Cymry dyn ni. We're Welsh. (North: Cymry dan ni)
  • Ffermwyr ydyn nhw. They're farmers.

Ydy, not mae. After a noun that comes first, use ydy (yw, ydi) for he, she and it, and ydyn for they, never mae or maen: Meddyg ydy hi. See Ydy, Yw and Ydi and Mae or Ydy?.

No mutation. The noun at the front keeps its normal form: Meddyg ydy hi, Plismon dw i.

Names. The same pattern gives a name: Siân dw i (I'm Siân). See Saying Your Name.

Two ways to give a job. Athro dw i and Dw i'n athro are both correct and both common. Putting the noun first puts it in the spotlight, which suits an answer to Who is she? or What do you do? The other pattern uses yn with soft mutation: Mae hi'n feddyg. See Describing With Yn.

Yes and no. A question that starts with a noun is answered ie or nage in the South and ia or naci in the North: Athro wyt ti? Ie. See Yes and No to Focused Questions.

  4. Ffermwr ydi o.

    He's a farmer.

    North: ydi and o.

  5. Beth ydy'ch gwaith chi? Plismon dw i.

    What's your job? I'm a police officer.

  6. Myfyrwyr dyn ni.

    North: Myfyrwyr dan ni.

Common Mistakes

  • Using mae after a noun at the front.

    Meddyg mae hi.
    Meddyg ydy hi.

When the noun comes first, he, she and it take ydy (yw in the South, ydi in the North), not mae.

  • Mutating the noun at the front.

    Feddyg ydy hi.
    Meddyg ydy hi.

The noun at the front keeps its dictionary form. Soft mutation belongs after yn: Mae hi'n feddyg.
