hefyd / chwaith
Also and Either: Hefyd and Chwaith
hefyd (also, too) goes with positive sentences; chwaith (either) goes with negative ones: Mae hi'n dod hefyd (She's coming too), Dydy hi ddim yn dod chwaith (She isn't coming either).
How It Works
Positive: hefyd
- Dw i'n hoffi te hefyd. I like tea too.
- Roedd Aled yno hefyd. Aled was there too.
In casual speech hefyd is often shortened to 'fyd: Fi 'fyd!
Negative: chwaith
- Dw i ddim yn hoffi coffi chwaith. I don't like coffee either.
- Doedd neb yno chwaith. Nobody was there either.
Chwaith is only used with a negative. See Present Negatives With Ddim.
Me too, me neither. Agree with a positive sentence using Fi hefyd or A fi; agree with a negative one using Na fi chwaith or, with more emphasis, Na finnau chwaith. Finnau is a special pronoun meaning me too, me as well; see Me Too, And You: Finnau, Tithau.
Starting a sentence. Hefyd can also begin a sentence to add a point: Hefyd, mae'r bwyd yn rhad (Also, the food is cheap). Chwaith is not used this way.
