trong khi
While
Trong khi connects two clauses to show that two actions are happening at the same time, or to highlight a contrast between two situations.
How It Works
1. Temporal Meaning ("While"):
Use trong khi to show that an action is happening in the background while another action occurs. It is equally natural whether the two actions have the same subject or different subjects. Note on subject omission: When the subject is the same in both clauses, it is most natural to drop the subject in the trong khi clause (e.g., Anh ấy nghe nhạc trong khi làm việc).
2. Contrastive Meaning ("Whereas"):
Use it to juxtapose two contrasting facts, states, or subjects. When used this way, Vietnamese speakers almost always add lại (or thì lại) before the verb in the second clause to emphasize the contrast. Note that while the synonym trong lúc can express contrast for literal, simultaneous time-bound actions, trong khi is required for timeless or abstract contrast.
3. Concessive Undertone:
Bridging the gap between temporal and contrastive uses, trong khi can carry a concessive undertone, much like the English word "while". However, it is not a direct translation of "even though" (which is mặc dù or tuy). It highlights a situation that makes the outcome surprising or contrary to expectations (e.g., Trong khi tôi đã cố gắng hết sức, anh ấy vẫn không hài lòng. - "While I tried my best, he was still not satisfied.").
4. Sentence Position & Punctuation:
It can introduce a dependent clause at the start of a sentence (Trong khi [Clause 1], [Clause 2]) or sit in the middle ([Clause 1] trong khi [Clause 2]). Punctuation note: When trong khi starts a sentence, a comma is almost always used to separate the dependent clause from the main clause. You can also use the transition phrase trong khi đó (meanwhile) to start a completely new sentence. Another highly common set phrase is trong khi chờ đợi (in the meantime / while waiting).
5. Not for Nouns ("During"):
English speakers often mistakenly treat trong khi like the preposition "during" and put a simple noun after it (e.g., trong khi bữa tiệc). Because trong khi is a conjunction, it must be followed by a verb or a full clause. To say "during [noun]", simply drop khi and use the preposition trong (e.g., trong bữa tiệc).
Note on continuous markers:
While trong khi frequently co-occurs with the continuous aspect marker đang, it is not grammatically required. The conjunction itself sufficiently establishes the continuous temporal frame.

- Trong khi tôi nấu ăn thì anh ấy dọn nhà.
While I cooked, he tidied up.
Word by Word: While I cook food then he tidy house.
Temporal usage showing two simultaneous actions performed by different subjects.
- Chị ấy rất năng động, trong khi anh trai chị ấy lại khá trầm tính.
She is very active, whereas her older brother is quite quiet.
Word by Word: Older sister that very active, whereas older brother older sister that contrary quite quiet.
Contrastive usage ('whereas') highlighting a disparity between two subjects. Notice the use of 'lại' to emphasize the contrast.
- Hãy cẩn thận trong khi làm việc.
Be careful while working.
Word by Word: Do careful while do work.
Temporal usage with the same subject, often used for background states or general advice.

Here, 'trong khi' sets a continuous background duration for a sudden event. It is paired with 'đang', though 'đang' is optional.
Common Mistakes
Using 'trong khi' for short, simultaneous active verbs by the same subject.
Tôi ăn trong khi xem TV.Tôi vừa ăn vừa xem TV.For short, simultaneous actions performed actively by the same subject, native speakers strongly prefer the vừa ... vừa ... pattern. Trong khi is better suited for longer background states, contrasting ideas, or when one action interrupts another.
Using 'trong lúc' for timeless or abstract contrast.
Tôi thích trà, trong lúc anh ấy thích cà phê.Tôi thích trà, trong khi anh ấy lại thích cà phê.While trong lúc can express contrast between two literal, simultaneous actions happening at a specific time, it cannot be used for timeless or abstract contrast (like general preferences). You must use trong khi (often paired with lại or còn) for abstract contrast.
Using 'trong khi' for instantaneous events instead of 'khi'.
Trong khi tôi đến, anh ấy đi vắng.Khi tôi đến, anh ấy đi vắng.Trong khi emphasizes a continuous duration. For a specific point in time or an instantaneous event (like arriving), you must use khi.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'trong khi' (while), you need to be familiar with the basic word for 'when' (khi) and the preposition 'trong' (inside). Additionally, understanding how 'thì' functions to link clauses is helpful for structuring sentences where one action happens alongside another.
- khiWhen
The word 'khi' is the core component meaning 'when' or 'time', which 'trong khi' builds upon to specify a duration.
Level 2 - trên / dưới / trong / ngoàiAbove / Below / Inside / Outside
The preposition 'trong' (inside) is used here metaphorically to mean 'inside the time that', forming the basis of the 'while' construction.
Level 1 - Topic + thì + CommentMarking the Topic with Thì
The particle 'thì' is frequently used to separate the 'trong khi' clause from the main clause, marking the relationship between the two actions.

Related Patterns
- vừa ... vừa ...Both ... and / While Doing
Used instead of trong khi when the same subject is actively performing two short actions simultaneously.
Level 2 - còn (đối lập)Whereas
Another common way to express contrast ('whereas' or 'as for'), functioning similarly to the contrastive use of trong khi.
Level 2 - Dropping The Subject Across Clauses
When using trong khi with the same subject in both clauses, the subject in the dependent clause is usually dropped, following the general rules of subject omission.
