sở dĩ ... là vì ...
The Reason Is That
Means "The reason why [Outcome] is because [Cause]." It reverses the standard cause-and-effect order to focus entirely on the explanation.
How It Works
The pattern sở dĩ ... là vì ... is a highly frequent and essential structure in advanced Vietnamese. It is widely used in careful, explanatory, or formal speech and writing to explain the reason behind a known fact.
1. Structure and Variants
- Sở dĩ + [Outcome Clause] + là vì + [Cause Clause / Noun Phrase / Verb Phrase]
The cause can be a full clause, a verb phrase, a simple noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun. The second half of the frame can be swapped with variants depending on the nuance of the cause:
- là bởi vì: Used frequently in both everyday speech and writing as a direct alternative to là vì.
- là do: Used for objective, factual causes.
- là nhờ: Used when the outcome is positive and credit is being given (thanks to).
- là tại: Used for negative causes or assigning blame.
- là bởi: Used in more literary or highly formal contexts.
- là để: Used when the outcome is an intentional action and the second clause states the purpose (is in order to).
Note that in natural speech, the copula là is frequently dropped (e.g., sở dĩ ... vì ... or sở dĩ ... do ...). Furthermore, in casual spoken Vietnamese, the word sở dĩ itself is often dropped entirely, leaving just the outcome clause followed by là vì, là do, or là tại. The cause marker (vì, do, nhờ, tại, bởi) is generally required before a physical noun phrase (saying sở dĩ ... là cơn bão instead of ... là do cơn bão is grammatically incorrect), but it can sometimes be dropped for abstract noun phrases (like faults or conditions), though keeping it is safer for learners. It can also occasionally be dropped if the cause is a full clause. Additionally, there is flexibility in subject placement: if the outcome clause has a specific subject, it can be placed either before or after sở dĩ (e.g., Sở dĩ anh ấy... or Anh ấy sở dĩ...). To add emphasis, speakers often insert chính before là vì (e.g., sở dĩ ... chính là vì ...), meaning 'the exact/main reason is that'. Regarding punctuation, no comma is required before là vì, but if the outcome clause is exceptionally long, writers frequently insert a comma before là vì or chính là vì to provide a natural pause.
2. Analytical vs. Chronological Order
Unlike vì ... nên ..., which follows a chronological sequence (Cause ➔ Effect), sở dĩ ... là vì ... follows an analytical sequence (Known Effect ➔ Explanation of Cause). You use this when the listener already knows what happened, and you want to focus their attention entirely on why it happened.
3. The "False Friend" Warning
If you are familiar with Sino-Vietnamese roots or Mandarin Chinese, beware: sở dĩ is derived from the Chinese 所以 (suǒyǐ), literally meaning "the reason why" or "that by which". While suǒyǐ alone means "therefore" in Modern Mandarin, the "reason why" meaning is preserved in specific structures like 之所以... 是因為... (zhī suǒyǐ... shì yīnwèi...), which perfectly parallels the Vietnamese usage. In Vietnamese, sở dĩ acts as a topic marker and must be followed by the outcome/effect. It can never be used to mean "therefore" (which would be cho nên or vì vậy).
4. Standalone Usage
The pattern can also be split, where the second half is used as a standalone sentence to explain the immediately preceding statement (e.g., Cô ấy đến trễ. Sở dĩ là do kẹt xe. - She arrived late. The reason is due to traffic).
5. Negative Contrastive Pattern
A core expansion for this structure is the negative contrastive pattern, used to correct a misconception about the cause: Sở dĩ + [Outcome] + không phải là vì + [Cause A] + mà là vì + [Cause B] (The reason why... is not because A, but because B).
Examples (5)
- Sở dĩ dự án chậm tiến độ là vì các bên chưa thống nhất tiêu chí.
The reason the project is behind schedule is that the parties have not yet agreed on the criteria.
Word by Word: Reason project slow schedule is because plural party not yet agree criteria.
A classic formal sentence where the outcome (delayed project) is already known, and the speaker is providing the analytical cause.
- Sở dĩ công ty quyết định đầu tư là do thị trường đang phát triển mạnh.
The reason the company decided to invest is due to the market developing strongly.
Word by Word: Reason company decide invest is due to market in progress develop strong.
Uses the variant 'là do' to introduce an objective, factual cause.
- Sở dĩ dự án thành công là nhờ sự giúp đỡ của anh ấy.
The reason the project was successful is thanks to his help.
Word by Word: Reason project success is thanks to abstract-classifier help of brother that.
Demonstrates the use of 'là nhờ' for a positive outcome, followed by a noun phrase rather than a full clause.
- Sở dĩ tôi làm vậy là để giúp bạn.
The reason I did that is to help you.
Word by Word: Reason I do like that is to help friend.
Demonstrates the 'là để' variant, where the second clause introduces a forward-looking purpose rather than a backward-looking cause.
- Cô ấy đến trễ. Sở dĩ là do kẹt xe.
She arrived late. The reason is due to a traffic jam.
Word by Word: Aunt that arrive late. Reason is due to stuck vehicle.
Shows the standalone usage where 'sở dĩ' begins a new sentence to explain the outcome stated in the previous sentence.
Common Mistakes
Combining 'lý do' with 'sở dĩ'.
Lý do sở dĩ tôi đến trễ là vì kẹt xe.Sở dĩ tôi đến trễ là vì kẹt xe.Using the noun 'lý do' (reason) alongside the conjunction 'sở dĩ' creates a tautology ('The reason the reason why...'). This redundancy is flagged as an error in formal writing.
Using 'sở dĩ' to mean 'therefore'.
Trời mưa to, sở dĩ tôi ở nhà.Trời mưa to, cho nên tôi ở nhà.Due to its Chinese etymology, learners sometimes mistakenly use 'sở dĩ' as a concluding conjunction. In Vietnamese, it can never mean 'therefore'; you must use cho nên or vì vậy instead.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'sở dĩ ... là vì ...', a learner must first be comfortable with the basic causal marker 'vì' (because) and the copula 'là' (to be). This pattern is essentially a formal inversion of a standard 'because' sentence, framing the reason as a noun-like clause.
- vìBecause
The word 'vì' is the core component of this frame, providing the basic meaning of 'because' which is then formalised by 'sở dĩ'.
Level 1 - làTo Be
The copula 'là' is used in this frame to link the outcome (the 'sở dĩ' clause) to the cause (the 'vì' clause).
Level 1 - Sino-Vietnamese And Native Words
'Sở dĩ' is a Sino-Vietnamese term; understanding the formal nature of Sino-Vietnamese words helps the learner grasp why this pattern is used in formal contexts compared to the basic 'vì'.
