Adjective + ơi là + Adjective

So Very ...!

Level 4

Expresses strong emotion like 'So incredibly...!' or 'Absolutely...!' by repeating an adjective around ơi là.

How It Works

This structure is used when you want to express a strong personal feeling—like excitement, surprise, frustration, or affection—rather than just stating an objective fact.

Key Rules:

  • Repetition vs. Exclamation: The most common structure repeats the adjective or verb. When using a subject in this standard pattern, it comes before the first adjective (e.g., Cô ấy đẹp ơi là đẹp or Món này ngon ơi là ngon). Alternatively, you can replace the first word with an exclamation to form a hybrid pattern, such as Trời ơi là đẹp! or Trời ơi là mệt! If you include a subject with this hybrid pattern, it usually comes after the exclamation or is dropped entirely (e.g., Trời ơi là nó đẹp! rather than Nó trời ơi là đẹp).
  • Gradable words and Nouns: This pattern works with gradable adjectives and verbs to express intensity (like hot, beautiful, or to miss). However, it is also highly productive with nouns to express massive quantity, abundance, or annoyance (e.g., người ơi là người for 'so many people', tiền ơi là tiền for 'so much money', or việc ơi là việc for 'so much work').
  • Verbs of emotion: Besides adjectives, this pattern is extremely common with stative verbs expressing feelings, such as nhớ (to miss), thích (to like), or ghét (to hate).
  • Word length: While most commonly used with single-syllable words (like ngon, nóng), it is perfectly natural with two-syllable words as well (like dễ thương, hạnh phúc).
  • Trời ơi là trời!: A very common phrase is Trời ơi là trời! (Oh my god!), used to express extreme frustration or shock. In the North, you will frequently hear the variation Giời ơi là giời! (or Ối giời ơi!).
  • Strictly affirmative: You cannot use negative particles like không or chưa with this pattern (e.g., không ngon ơi là không ngon is incorrect). Instead, you must use the antonym (e.g., dở ơi là dở).
  • Regional variations: Southern speakers frequently append intensifiers like luôn to the end of the phrase to make it sound warmer or more emphatic.
  • Pronunciation and Texting: In natural speech, the word ơi receives heavy stress and is often dragged out for dramatic effect. In texting and social media, native speakers frequently mimic this spoken stress by elongating the word in writing (e.g., đẹp ơiiiii là đẹp or nhớ ơiii là nhớ). Additionally, Gen Z internet slang has evolved Trời ơi là trời into the wildly popular U là trời (often abbreviated as ultr).
  • Register: This is strictly for casual conversations, texting, and social media. Never use it in formal writing or polite business contexts, where you should use rất instead.

Note: Do not try to translate this literally as 'Oh is'. The phrase ơi là functions as a single, indivisible emphatic unit. Also, despite some myths, this pattern is used nationwide, not just in the North!

Examples (5)

  1. Món này ngon ơi là ngon!

This dish is so incredibly delicious!

Word by Word: Dish this delicious oh is delicious!

A very common way to express strong delight about food.

  2. Mấy bữa nay trời nắng ơi là nắng!

It's been blazing hot the last few days!

Word by Word: Several days this sky sunny oh is sunny!

Expresses frustration or exhaustion regarding the extreme weather.

  3. Cô bé đó dễ thương ơi là dễ thương.

That little girl is absolutely adorable.

Word by Word: Aunt little that cute oh is cute.

Demonstrates that the pattern works perfectly with two-syllable adjectives like 'dễ thương'.

  4. Bài thi hôm nay khó ơi là khó luôn!

    Today's exam was ridiculously hard!

Word by Word: Lesson exam today difficult oh is difficult always!

The word 'luôn' is often added at the end in Southern Vietnamese for even more emphasis.

  5. Xa nhà mấy tháng, mình nhớ mẹ ơi là nhớ!

Being away from home for a few months, I miss my mom so incredibly much!

Word by Word: Far home several months, I miss mother oh is miss!

Demonstrates the pattern used with a verb of emotion ('nhớ' - to miss).

Common Mistakes

  • Using action verbs directly with the pattern.

Anh ấy chạy ơi là chạy!
Anh ấy chạy nhanh ơi là nhanh!

This pattern is used to intensify descriptions or feelings, so it only works with adjectives or stative verbs of emotion (like 'thích' or 'nhớ'). For action verbs, you must intensify the adverb describing the action instead.

  • Using the pattern in formal or professional contexts.

Kính gửi Giám đốc, dự án này quan trọng ơi là quan trọng.
Kính gửi Giám đốc, dự án này rất quan trọng.

This pattern is highly colloquial and emotional. In formal writing or polite business communication, use objective intensifiers like 'rất' or 'vô cùng'.

Learn This First

To learn this emphatic pattern, you first need to understand how adjectives work in Vietnamese and be familiar with basic ways to say 'very' or 'so'. The structure relies on repeating the adjective around the phrase 'ơi là' to create an 'absolutely X' or 'so very X' meaning.
