ngược lại

On the Contrary

Level 4

Expresses "on the contrary," "in contrast," or "vice versa." It introduces a direct, polar opposite to a previous statement or assumption.

How It Works

As a Level 4 learner, you need to distinguish ngược lại from other contrastive words. It carries a strong sense of polar opposition. While it often actively negates a previous assumption, corrects a misconception, or presents a mirrored opposite, it is also frequently used in formal writing to simply mean "In contrast" or "Conversely" when comparing two differing states (e.g., Nền kinh tế của họ đang phát triển. Ngược lại, kinh tế của chúng ta đang suy thoái.).

1. Main Structures:

  • Clause-initial: [Statement 1]. Ngược lại, [Statement 2]. (On the contrary / In contrast...)
  • Parallel Subject Contrast: [Subject 1] + [Predicate 1], ngược lại [Subject 2] + [Predicate 2] (Contrasting two subjects). Note that ngược lại can also sit after the second subject, but native speakers almost always insert the topic marker thì or the adverb lại to improve flow: [Subject 2] thì ngược lại, [Predicate 2] or [Subject 2] ngược lại lại [Predicate 2].
  • Subject + thì ngược lại: [Clause 1], [Subject 2] + thì ngược lại. (A highly common conversational pattern, e.g., Tôi thích mùa hè, anh ấy thì ngược lại).
  • With a Noun Phrase: Ngược lại (với) [Noun], [Clause]. (Contrary to / Unlike...). Note that với is often optional with abstract nouns, but usually required with pronouns for clarity.
  • Predicate: [Subject] + ngược lại (Is the opposite, e.g., Sự thật hoàn toàn ngược lại).
  • Clause-final: ... và ngược lại (... and vice versa) or ... hoặc ngược lại (... or vice versa).
  • Literal Adverb: [Verb] + ngược lại (Backwards / In reverse, e.g., quay ngược lại).
  • Reciprocal Action: [Verb] + ngược lại (To do something back / in return, e.g., hỏi ngược lại). Note the difference from just using lại: hỏi lại means to ask again or ask back, whereas hỏi ngược lại means to ask a counter-question or turn the tables.
  • Defying Expectations: làm ngược lại (To do the exact opposite). This is heavily used in conversation when someone defies expectations or instructions.
  • Active Verb Phrase: đi ngược lại (với) [Noun] (To go against / run counter to).
  • Adjective: [Noun] + ngược lại (The opposite [Noun], e.g., hướng ngược lại, kết quả ngược lại).
  • Intensified: hoàn toàn ngược lại (Completely the opposite).
  • Standalone Exclamation: Ngược lại! (Quite the opposite! / On the contrary!).
  • Common Fixed Compounds: ngược chiều (opposite direction, used for traffic) and ngược đời (paradoxical / ironic).

2. Crucial Distinctions:

  • Vs. Trái lại: Often taught as exact synonyms. However, trái lại only handles abstract contrast. Ngược lại also handles physical direction and logical reciprocity ("vice versa"). While "và trái lại" is occasionally used in highly formal, legal, or translated documents, ngược lại is the standard and natural choice for "vice versa" in most contexts.
  • Vs. tuy nhiên (However): Tuy nhiên expresses concession (an unexpected outcome despite the first clause). Ngược lại expresses strict, diametric opposition.
  • Vs. một mặt ... mặt khác ... (On the other hand): Use mặt khác when weighing complementary options or different perspectives. Ngược lại expresses a polar contrast or inverse relationship.

3. Register and Tone:
Ngược lại is highly versatile. It is equally natural in casual, everyday conversation and in formal, academic, or professional writing.

Examples (6)

  1. Tôi không hề mệt. Ngược lại, tôi thấy rất khỏe.

I am not tired at all. On the contrary, I feel very energetic.

Word by Word: I not at-all tired. Reverse back, I feel very healthy.

Used at the beginning of the second clause to present a direct, polar opposite to the first statement.

  2. Ngược lại với suy nghĩ của nhiều người, tiếng Việt không có thì.

Contrary to what many people think, Vietnamese does not have tense.

Word by Word: Reverse back with thought of many people, language Vietnamese not have tense.

When contrasting directly with a noun phrase, it must be followed by the preposition 'với'.

  3. Anh ấy giúp cô ấy và ngược lại.

He helps her and vice versa.

Word by Word: Brother that help aunt that and reverse back.

Placed at the end of a sentence after 'và' to indicate a reciprocal relationship ('vice versa').

  4. Xe máy đi hướng này, còn ô tô đi hướng ngược lại.

Motorbikes go this way, while cars go the opposite direction.

Word by Word: Vehicle machine go direction this, as-for auto go direction reverse back.

Unlike 'trái lại', 'ngược lại' can be used as an adjective to describe physical directions.

  5. Khi tôi hỏi, anh ấy không trả lời mà hỏi ngược lại tôi.

When I asked, he didn't answer but asked me back.

Word by Word: When I ask, brother that not answer but ask reverse back I.

Used after a verb of communication or action to indicate a reciprocal action ('asking back' or 'in return').

  6. Sự thật hoàn toàn ngược lại với những gì họ nói.

The truth is completely the opposite of what they said.

Word by Word: Truth completely reverse back with plural what they say.

The phrase 'hoàn toàn ngược lại' is a highly common collocation meaning 'completely the opposite'.

Common Mistakes

  • Missing the preposition 'với' when contrasting with a pronoun.

Ngược lại anh ấy, tôi rất thích ăn cay.
Ngược lại với anh ấy, tôi rất thích ăn cay.

English speakers often translate 'Unlike [Person]' or 'Contrary to [Person]' by placing 'ngược lại' directly before the pronoun. In Vietnamese, while 'với' (with) can sometimes be dropped before abstract nouns, it is generally required before pronouns or specific people for clarity.

  • Using it for simple concession instead of polar opposition.

Trời mưa to. Ngược lại, chúng tôi vẫn đi chơi.
Trời mưa to. Tuy nhiên, chúng tôi vẫn đi chơi.

'Ngược lại' requires a diametric opposite. For an unexpected outcome despite the first clause (concession), use 'tuy nhiên' (however). Using 'ngược lại' here sounds unnaturally argumentative.
