Nominalising Organised Events
The word cuộc is an abstract classifier that nominalises verbs, or unitises nouns, into a noun phrase representing an organised event, a dynamic process, or an interaction with a clear beginning and end.
How It Works
Because Vietnamese is an isolating language, there are no morphological changes to the base word. The classifier cuộc is used to nominalise verbs, or to unitise nouns, into bounded events, episodes, or processes. It frequently collocates with verbs involving interaction or competition (e.g., họp [to meet] → cuộc họp [a meeting], thi [to compete] → cuộc thi [a competition], phiêu lưu [to adventure] → cuộc phiêu lưu [an adventure]). While sự is the standard nominaliser for adjectives, cuộc only forms lexicalised set phrases with a select few adjectives that imply an atmosphere or activity (e.g., vui [fun/happy] → cuộc vui [a party/gathering]). When attaching to existing nouns, it acts as a unitiser to turn a general concept into a specific, countable episode (e.g., đời [life] → cuộc đời [a life]). It can even attach to concrete nouns to shift the meaning to an event centered around that object (e.g., điện thoại [telephone] → cuộc điện thoại [a phone call], cờ [chess] → cuộc cờ [a chess match]). Furthermore, cuộc frequently collocates with Sino-Vietnamese terms to denote major historical, political, or social events (e.g., cuộc chiến tranh [a war], cuộc khủng hoảng [a crisis], cuộc biểu tình [a protest], cuộc cách mạng [a revolution]). However, it is equally productive with native, everyday words (e.g., cuộc gọi [a call], cuộc chơi [a game], cuộc cãi vã [an argument]). Additionally, cuộc can be used as a standalone noun referring to an event, game, or situation, as seen in common idioms like vào cuộc (to get involved) or người ngoài cuộc (an outsider).
Learners often confuse cuộc with the other major nominalisers, sự and việc. Swapping them fundamentally changes the meaning:
- Sự focuses on a static condition or abstract phenomenon, and is used to nominalise both verbs and adjectives into abstract nouns (e.g., sự phát triển - development, sự thật - truth).
- Việc focuses on the execution of a task, deed, or matter. While often framing an entire action as in việc + Clause, it can also attach to standalone verbs or nouns (e.g., việc học - the act of studying, việc nhà - housework).
- Cuộc frames the concept as a bounded event, episode, or process.
To see the difference, compare them applied to the same concept: sự sống (the abstract state of being alive), việc sống (the biological act of staying alive), and cuộc sống (the experiential journey of life). Alternatively, compare việc họp (the act of meeting) with cuộc họp (the meeting event itself).
Learners should also note the difference between cuộc and buổi when referring to gatherings. While cuộc emphasizes the event or activity itself (e.g., cuộc họp - the meeting event), buổi emphasizes the time period or session in which it occurs (e.g., buổi họp - the meeting session).
Similarly, it is important to distinguish cuộc from trận, another classifier for events. While cuộc is used for organized events, processes, or interactions, trận is reserved for specific physical clashes, bouts, outbursts, or natural phenomena. For example, compare cuộc chiến (a war or campaign) with trận chiến (a specific battle), or cuộc thi (a competition) with trận đấu (a specific match or game).
Syntactically, cuộc acts as a classifier. This means it fulfills a structural role in a noun phrase, allowing the abstract concept to be counted with numbers (e.g., một cuộc họp - one meeting, hai cuộc thi - two competitions). It can also be preceded by plural markers like những or followed by demonstratives like này.
Examples (6)
- Cuộc họp ngày mai sẽ bắt đầu lúc 8 giờ sáng.
Tomorrow's meeting will start at 8 a.m.
Word by Word: Event meet tomorrow will start at 8 hour morning.
The verb 'họp' (to meet) is nominalised by 'cuộc' to become the event 'cuộc họp' (a meeting). This focuses on the event itself, whereas 'buổi họp' would focus on the time session.
- Họ đã trải qua một cuộc chiến tranh tàn khốc.
They went through a devastating war.
Word by Word: They already experience pass one event war devastating.
Here, 'cuộc' attaches to the noun 'chiến tranh' (war) to emphasize it as a specific, bounded historical episode.
- Cuộc sống ở thành phố rất ồn ào và náo nhiệt.
Life in the city is very noisy and bustling.
Word by Word: Event live at city very noisy and bustling.
'Cuộc sống' frames life as an unfolding, experiential journey, contrasting with 'việc sống' (the biological act of staying alive) and 'sự sống' (the abstract state of being alive).
- Chúng tôi vừa có một cuộc nói chuyện rất thú vị.
We just had a very interesting conversation.
Word by Word: We just have one event talk very interesting.
The verb phrase 'nói chuyện' (to talk) becomes the event 'cuộc nói chuyện' (a conversation), highlighting the interaction between participants.
- Cuộc thi bơi lội sẽ diễn ra vào tuần sau.
The swimming competition will take place next week.
Word by Word: Event compete swim will happen on week after.
'Cuộc thi' refers to the organised competition event itself, not just the act of taking a test.
- Tôi vừa nhận được một cuộc gọi từ mẹ.
I just received a phone call from my mom.
Word by Word: I just receive get one event call from mother.
The everyday verb 'gọi' (to call) is nominalised by 'cuộc' to form 'cuộc gọi' (a phone call), showing its use with common native words.
Common Mistakes
Overgeneralising the generic inanimate classifier 'cái' for events.
Cái họp hôm nay rất dài.Cuộc họp hôm nay rất dài.Learners often default to cái for abstract nouns, but events, dynamic processes, and organised interactions require the specific classifier cuộc.
Omitting the classifier entirely when using plural markers or demonstratives.
Những họp này rất quan trọng.Những cuộc họp này rất quan trọng.Because English doesn't use classifiers for abstract events, learners often drop them. In Vietnamese, to say 'these meetings', you must include cuộc after the plural marker những to make the phrase grammatical.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'cuộc', you first need to be comfortable with the Vietnamese system of classifiers and nominalizers. 'Cuộc' acts as a specialized marker that turns concepts or verbs into nouns specifically related to organized events, processes, or interactions involving multiple participants.
- sự + VerbTurning a Verb into a Noun
Both 'cuộc' and 'sự' are nominalizers; understanding how 'sự' turns actions into abstract nouns provides the conceptual framework for how 'cuộc' turns events into nouns.
Level 4 - trậnClassifier for Bouts and Matches
Both 'cuộc' and 'trận' are used for events and bouts; learning 'trận' helps the learner distinguish between different types of event-based classifiers.

- việc + ClauseTurning a Clause into a Noun
Contrasts with 'cuộc'. While often framing an entire action as a clause, 'việc' focuses on the execution of a task, deed, or piece of work, and can also attach to standalone verbs or nouns (e.g., việc học, việc nhà), whereas 'cuộc' focuses on an event or process itself.
Level 4 - Nominalising Classifiers
'Cuộc' is a prime example of a nominalising classifier, demonstrating how Vietnamese uses classifiers to give syntactic structure to abstract concepts, such as allowing them to be counted.
Level 5 - cái + AdjectiveThe Abstract Quality Itself
Another method of nominalisation, but specifically used to extract the abstract quality of an adjective, unlike the event-focused 'cuộc'.
