biết ... nhưng vẫn ...

Knowing Better and Doing It Anyway

Level 4

The pattern biết ... nhưng vẫn ... means "knowing [X], but still doing [Y]." It highlights a psychological contradiction where someone acts against their better judgment or persists despite knowing the risks.

How It Works

This pattern is highly versatile and used to express stubbornness, lack of self-control, or heroic determination.

Structure:

  • (Subject) + biết + (là/rằng) + [Condition] + (nhưng) + (Subject) + vẫn + [Action]

Key Nuances:

  • Internal Cognition: Unlike mặc dù ... nhưng ... which states an objective fact ("Although it is dangerous..."), this pattern centers on the subject's awareness ("Knowing it is dangerous...").
  • Full Clause Conditions: The [Condition] can be a full clause with its own subject, different from the main subject. For example: Tôi biết [anh ấy nghèo] nhưng tôi vẫn [yêu anh ấy] (I know he is poor, but I still love him).
  • Not Just For Mistakes: While often used for bad habits (knowing it's wrong but doing it anyway), it is equally common for positive perseverance (knowing it's hard but trying anyway).
  • Omission in Casual Speech: In spoken Vietnamese, the linkers là or rằng are frequently dropped, though biết là is often treated as a fixed chunk by native speakers in everyday speech. Furthermore, the word nhưng is also frequently dropped, replaced by a pause (or comma in writing), relying entirely on the mandatory vẫn to provide the contrast (e.g., 'Biết nguy hiểm, vẫn làm'). If the subject is clear from context, it is often omitted entirely in both clauses.
  • The Role of Vẫn: You must include vẫn (still) or a similar correlative adverb like cũng (also/still) in the second clause. They can even be combined for emphasis (nhưng cũng vẫn...). Without it, the sentence sounds grammatically incomplete to a native ear.

Comparison with "Biết thế":
Do not confuse this with "biết thế" (or its common variant "biết vậy") meaning "if I had known". "Biết thế" is for retrospective regret where the subject didn't know at the time. Biết ... nhưng vẫn means the subject did know and acted anyway.

Examples (4)

  1. Biết sai nhưng vẫn làm.

He knew it was wrong but did it anyway.

Word by Word: know wrong but still do

A classic example of acting against one's better judgment. The subject is omitted but understood from context.

  2. Biết là khó nhưng tôi vẫn muốn thử.

Knowing it is difficult, I still want to try.

Word by Word: know is difficult but I still want try

Shows the pattern used for positive determination, not just negative mistakes. Notice the optional complementizer 'là' (that/is) after 'biết'.

  3. Dẫu biết hút thuốc có hại cho sức khỏe nhưng anh ấy vẫn không bỏ được.

Even knowing smoking is harmful to health, he still can't quit.

Word by Word: even know smoke have harm for health but older_brother that still not quit able

Demonstrates a lack of self-control. Words like 'dẫu' or 'dù' (even though) can be added before 'biết' for extra emphasis.

  4. Biết nguy hiểm nhưng các chiến sĩ vẫn xông lên.

Knowing the danger, the soldiers still charged forward.

Word by Word: know dangerous but plural soldier still charge up

Highlights heroic perseverance despite being fully aware of the risks.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting 'vẫn' (still) in the second clause.

Tôi biết sai nhưng tôi làm.
Tôi biết sai nhưng tôi vẫn làm.

English speakers often translate 'but I did it' directly. In Vietnamese concessive clauses, a correlative adverb like 'vẫn' (still) is required to balance the sentence and mark the concessive force.

Learn This First

This pattern is a compound structure that combines the verb 'biết' (to know) with the contrastive conjunction 'nhưng' (but) and the adverb 'vẫn' (still). To understand this expression, a learner needs to be familiar with how to express knowledge, how to form basic contrastive sentences, and how to use 'vẫn' to indicate that an action continues or occurs despite other factors.
