thế nào

How

Level 1

In Vietnamese, to ask "how" something is done or "what" something is like, you place thế nào at the end of the sentence.

How It Works

thế nào is an essential question word used to ask about manner, state, or opinion.

1. Asking about an action (Method/Manner)
Pattern: Verb + thế nào?
Use this to ask how an action is performed. For example, "How do you cook this?" becomes "Cook this how?" (Nấu món này thế nào?).

2. Asking about a state or opinion (Description)
Pattern: Noun/Subject + thế nào?
Use this to ask what something is like. For example, "How is the weather?" (Thời tiết thế nào?).

3. Asking "How to" do something
Pattern: Làm thế nào để + Verb
This is a very common pattern to ask for instructions or solutions. For example, "How to learn Vietnamese?" (Làm thế nào để học tiếng Việt?).

4. Asking for a definition
Pattern: Thế nào là + Noun?
Used to ask "What is [Noun]?" or "What defines [Noun]?" For example, "What is happiness?" (Thế nào là hạnh phúc?).

Important Notes:

  • Adding "như": For Patterns 1 and 2, you can interchangeably add như before thế nào (meaning "like how" or "like what"). For example, Thời tiết như thế nào? or Nấu món này như thế nào?
  • Position: While it usually goes at the end of the sentence for simple descriptions and methods (because Question Words Stay In Place), it appears at the beginning or middle in the specific patterns mentioned above.
  • Not for quantity: thế nào cannot be used to ask "how much" (How Much / How Many).
  • Register and regional variations: While Southern Vietnamese speakers often prefer làm sao for actions and ra sao for descriptions, these are also very common in Northern casual, everyday speech. It is as much a difference in register (formal vs. casual) as it is regional.
  • Non-question uses: In statements, you will often hear phrases like thế nào cũng (definitely/for sure) or thế nào cũng được (anything is fine / however is fine).

Examples (4)

  1. Món này nấu thế nào?

How do you cook this dish?

Word by Word: Dish this cook how?

Asking about the method or manner of an action (cooking).

  2. Thời tiết ở đó thế nào?

What is the weather like there?

Word by Word: Weather at there how?

Asking about the state or condition of a noun (the weather).

  3. Bạn thấy bộ phim này thế nào?

What do you think of this movie?

Word by Word: You perceive classifier movie this how?

Asking for an opinion or description.

  4. Dạo này bạn thế nào?

    How have you been lately?

Word by Word: Lately you how?

A natural way to ask "How are you?" in Vietnamese, asking about someone's current state.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting 'thế nào' at the beginning of a simple method or description question.

    Thế nào bạn đi làm?
    Bạn đi làm thế nào?

For simple questions about how you do an action, Vietnamese uses Question Words Stay In Place. The question word stays where the answer would be, which is usually at the end. Only specific patterns like 'Thế nào là...' or 'Làm thế nào để...' place it at the beginning or middle.

  • Using 'thế nào' to ask about quantity or degree (like 'how much' or 'how old').

    Bạn thế nào tuổi?
    Bạn bao nhiêu tuổi?

thế nào strictly asks for a qualitative description or process. To ask about quantity or degree, you must use words like How Much / How Many or How Many (small numbers).
