cứ ... là ...

Every Time ... Then ...

Level 3

Use the structure cứ + [Condition] + là + [Result] to express that every time a specific event happens, a predictable result inevitably follows.

How It Works

The syntactic frame is cứ + [Condition/Trigger] + là + [Result].

Key Characteristics:

  • Automatic Reaction: It emphasizes that the result is predictable, like a natural phenomenon, an established routine, or an unavoidable habit.
  • Noun Triggers: The trigger following cứ is frequently just a time or event noun (e.g., Cứ cuối tuần là..., Cứ Tết là...), rather than a full clause or action.
  • Rules and Warnings: This pattern is heavily used to state rules, instructions, or warnings where the 'result' is a mandated action (e.g., Cứ thấy đèn đỏ là phải dừng lại).
  • Not a Copula: The word là here does NOT mean To Be. Instead, it acts as a marker separating the background condition from the inevitable result.
  • Tense-Neutral: Because Vietnamese relies on Aspect Rather Than Tense, you can use this pattern for past habits, present routines, or timeless facts. The context determines the time.

Structural Variations & Subject Placement:

  • Using thì: The word là can often be replaced by thì (cứ ... thì ...) with no change in meaning.
  • Combining with hễ: For extra emphasis on the condition, hễ and cứ are frequently combined into hễ cứ ... là/thì ....
  • Subject Placement: It is very common in spoken Vietnamese to put cứ at the absolute beginning of the sentence, even when the condition and result share the same subject, placing the subject later. Cứ also sits at the beginning when the condition and result have different subjects (e.g., Cứ + [Subject 1 + Action] + là + [Subject 2 + Reaction]). Furthermore, following the rule of Dropping The Subject, the subject can be omitted entirely when stating general facts or when obvious from context.

Comparison with other patterns:
While If ... Then ... is used for hypothetical situations, cứ ... là ... is for established facts. It is very similar to Whenever ... Then ..., but cứ ... là ... feels slightly more colloquial and places a heavier emphasis on the stubborn repetition of the habit.

Examples (4)

  1. Cứ mưa là đường ngập.

Whenever it rains, the streets flood.

Word by Word: Every time / rain / then / street / flood.

A classic example of a natural, inevitable consequence.

  2. Cứ đọc thư của anh ấy là cô ấy lại khóc.

Whenever she reads his letter, she cries.

Word by Word: Every time / read / letter / belonging to / him / then / she / again / cry.

Shows an automatic emotional reaction. Notice how 'lại' (again) is often paired with the result to emphasize the repetition.

  3. Cứ gặp nhau là họ cãi nhau.

    Whenever they meet, they argue.

Word by Word: Every time / meet / each other / then / they / argue / each other.

Describes a predictable, unavoidable habit between people.

  4. Cứ đến cuối tuần là tôi đi siêu thị.

Every time the weekend comes, I go to the supermarket.

    Word by Word: Every time / arrive / weekend / then / I / go / supermarket.

Demonstrates how the pattern attaches to a time phrase to express an established routine.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'nếu ... thì ...' when you mean 'every time'.

Different MeaningNếu tôi uống cà phê thì tôi không ngủ được.
Cứ uống cà phê là tôi không ngủ được.

'Nếu tôi uống cà phê thì tôi không ngủ được' is a correct sentence about a condition. When describing an inevitable habit or automatic reaction ('Every time I drink coffee...'), cứ ... là ... says it more directly. If ... Then ... sounds more like a general condition than a known pattern.

  • Forgetting 'là' and confusing the pattern with the adverb 'cứ' (to keep doing something).

    Cứ mưa đường ngập.
    Cứ mưa là đường ngập.

The word Go Ahead by itself means to 'keep doing' something (e.g., 'cứ đi' = keep going). To express 'whenever A, then B', you must include là to introduce the result.

Learn This First

The pattern 'cứ ... là ...' describes a habitual or inevitable sequence of events. To understand it, learners need to know the individual meanings of 'cứ' (to persist/continue) and 'là' (to be/connector). It also builds on the logic of basic conditional structures like 'nếu ... thì ...', where one event triggers another.
