Even Though (Literary)

Level 6

Dẫu is the high-register, literary twin of dù. It means 'even if' or 'although' but carries a heavier emotional, dramatic, or poetic weight.

How It Works

While dẫu translates to 'even if' or 'although', its usage is defined by its register and nuance:

  • Register: It is highly formal, literary, and poetic. You will encounter it frequently in literature, journalism, proverbs, and song lyrics, but it is rare in casual, everyday speech.
  • Hypotheticals vs. Facts: Unlike mặc dù ... nhưng ... or tuy ... nhưng ..., which are generally used to state established, concrete facts, dẫu is highly flexible. Like dù, it can be used for extreme or hypothetical concessions ('even if X were to happen'), but it adds a distinct literary flair. To emphasize the hypothetical nature of a statement, it is very frequently paired with có to form the structure dẫu có (e.g., Dẫu có khó khăn, tôi vẫn làm - Even if there are difficulties, I will still do it). Furthermore, it is frequently paired with emphatic markers like đến mấy (no matter how much) or đi chăng nữa / đi nữa (even if... happens) to emphasize extreme hypotheticals.
  • Sentence Position: While often placed at the beginning of a sentence, dẫu can also appear in the middle to connect two clauses (e.g., Tôi vẫn sẽ đi, dẫu trời mưa - I will still go, even if it rains).
  • Compound Forms: It frequently combines with other words to form compound conjunctions with identical meanings but slightly different rhythms, such as dẫu cho (even if), dẫu rằng (even though that), dẫu là (even if it is), and the fixed phrase dẫu sao (anyway/regardless). Additionally, dẫu vậy (even so / despite that / however) is a very common transitional phrase used at the beginning of a sentence to contrast with the previous thought.
  • Regional/Phonetic Variant: You will also frequently encounter the variant dầu (e.g., dầu sao, dầu vậy, mặc dầu). This is used in the exact same contexts, particularly in older literature or Southern dialects.

Note: Dẫu is not a dead or archaic word; it remains a vibrant part of modern written Vietnamese and media.

Examples (5)

  1. Dẫu trời mưa to, chúng tôi vẫn quyết tâm lên đường.

Even if it rains heavily, we are still determined to set off.

Word by Word: Even if sky rain big, we still determined go on road.

Demonstrates a hypothetical or extreme condition paired with 'vẫn' in the main clause.

  2. Dẫu biết là khó, cô ấy vẫn quyết tâm thử.

Though she knew it was difficult, she was still determined to try.

Word by Word: Even though know is difficult, she still determined try.

Shows 'dẫu' used with an established fact, adding a dramatic and emotional weight to her determination.

  3. Dẫu cho vật đổi sao dời, tình yêu này vẫn không thay đổi.

Even if things change and stars shift, this love will still not change.

Word by Word: Even if thing change star shift, love this still not change.

A highly poetic and literary usage featuring the compound 'dẫu cho' and a four-syllable idiom.

  4. Dẫu cuộc đời nhiều gian truân nhưng anh ấy không bao giờ bỏ cuộc.

Even though life has many hardships, he never gives up.

Word by Word: Even though life many hardship but he not ever give up.

Here, 'dẫu' is paired with 'nhưng' (but) to balance the concession in a formal, dramatic context.

  5. Dẫu sao thì chuyện cũng đã qua rồi.

Anyway, the matter has already passed.

Word by Word: Anyway then matter also already pass already.

Uses the fixed phrase 'dẫu sao' (anyway / regardless), paired with 'cũng'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'dẫu' in casual, everyday conversation.

Dẫu trời nóng, cho tôi một ly cà phê nóng nhé.
Dù trời nóng, cho tôi một ly cà phê nóng nhé.

Advanced learners often discover 'dẫu' and overuse it to sound more fluent. However, in a daily context (like ordering food or chatting with friends), using 'dẫu' sounds unnaturally theatrical. Native speakers almost exclusively use 'dù' or 'mặc dù' in casual speech.

  • Dropping the balancing word (vẫn, cũng, nhưng) in the main clause.

Dẫu anh ấy xin lỗi, tôi không tha thứ.
Dẫu anh ấy xin lỗi, tôi vẫn không tha thứ.

Because English says 'Although A, B' without a second conjunction, learners often drop 'vẫn', 'cũng', or 'nhưng' in the second clause. In Vietnamese, 'Dẫu A, B' without a balancing word is possible but usually sounds less complete.
