bộ

Classifier for Sets

Level 2

In Vietnamese, bộ is the classifier used for things that naturally come as a matched set, a collection of parts, or a complete system.

How It Works

Unlike cái or chiếc, which refer to single, individual items, bộ implies a complete set designed to function together, or a complex system. For some nouns, modern speakers do not actively conceptualize them as sets; bộ has simply become the fixed classifier.

Key Uses of Bộ:

  • Physical Sets: bộ quần áo (an outfit - top and bottom), bộ đồ (an outfit/clothes - highly common in South/Central Vietnam), bộ bàn ghế (a table and chairs set), bộ hồ sơ (a set of documents / an application file).
  • Machinery and Technology: bộ máy tính (a desktop computer), bộ máy (a mechanical system/engine).
  • Biological Systems: bộ não (the brain), bộ xương (the skeleton), bộ răng (a set of teeth), bộ râu (a beard/mustache), bộ mặt (the face), bộ ngực (the chest), bộ lông (fur/feathers). Mentioning bộ mặt is especially useful to reinforce how bộ acts as a fixed classifier for things that don't intuitively feel like sets to English speakers. This contrasts with single organs which use different classifiers, like quả tim (a heart) or lá phổi (a lung). Note that bộ mặt is also frequently used metaphorically to mean "the true face" or "the appearance/facade" of something (e.g., bộ mặt thật - the true face, bộ mặt của thành phố - the face of the city).
  • Media and Abstract Wholes: bộ phim (a film/series), bộ sách (a book series), bộ truyện (a comic/story series), bộ luật (a legal code). You can also use it for abstract administrative systems like bộ máy nhà nước (the state apparatus).
  • Games and Cards: bộ bài (a deck of cards), bộ cờ (a board game set).

Bộ as a Question Particle: In spoken Vietnamese (especially in the South), bộ is heavily used at the beginning of a sentence to express surprise, skepticism, or a rhetorical tone. For example: Bộ anh tưởng tôi ngốc hả? (Do you really think I'm stupid?).

Important Note on Movies and TV: Bộ phim is the classifier phrase for any cinematic work, whether it is a single movie or a TV series. However, if you want to specifically refer to a multi-episode TV series as a noun, the term is phim bộ or phim truyền hình. The opposite of this is a standalone movie, called phim lẻ.

Bonus Tips: In news and formal contexts, you will also see Bộ used to mean "Ministry" (e.g., Bộ Giáo dục - Ministry of Education). Additionally, a highly common vocabulary word is đi bộ, which means "to walk" or "to go on foot", and đường bộ means "by land". These are different usages from the classifier, stemming from different Sino-Vietnamese roots (部 for part/ministry/set vs 步 for step/walk). You will also see bộ used in words related to appearance or manner, such as bộ dạng (appearance/look) or làm bộ (to pretend/put on an act). The meaning evolved metaphorically from the root 步 (step/walk) meaning 'gait/way of walking' to 'physical posture/manner', and finally to 'appearance' or 'putting on an act'. Other important related vocabulary includes bộ phận (part/component) and bộ thủ (radical in Chinese characters).

Examples (4)

  1. Hôm nay tôi sẽ mặc bộ quần áo mới này đi dự tiệc.

Today, I will wear this new outfit to the party.

Word by Word: Today I will wear set clothes new this go attend party.

Bộ is used because an outfit consists of multiple matching pieces (like a shirt and pants) meant to be worn together.

  2. Bộ phim hôm qua chúng ta xem rất cảm động.

The movie we watched yesterday was very touching.

Word by Word: Set film yesterday we watch very touching.

Bộ is the classifier for cinematic works, including both movies and TV series.

  3. Bộ bàn ghế gỗ này rất đắt tiền.

This wooden table and chair set is very expensive.

Word by Word: Set table chair wood this very expensive money.

Used for furniture that comes as a matching set.

  4. Rượu bia không tốt cho bộ não.

Alcohol is not good for the brain.

Word by Word: Alcohol beer not good for set brain.

Bộ is the mandatory classifier for biological systems and organs that function as a whole, like the brain or skeleton.

Common Mistakes

  • Using "cái" instead of "bộ" for sets.

Tôi muốn mua một cái quần áo.
Tôi muốn mua một bộ quần áo.

cái is for single items (like cái áo - a shirt). For a matched set like an outfit, you must use bộ.

  • Omitting the classifier with media or stacking classifiers.

Chúng ta hãy xem một phim mới.
Chúng ta hãy xem một bộ phim mới.

English speakers often omit the classifier for movies, but in Vietnamese, phim requires the classifier bộ. Also, never stack classifiers (e.g., do not say cái bộ phim).

Learn This First

To understand 'bộ', you first need to understand how classifiers function in Vietnamese to categorize nouns. Since 'bộ' is used to count or specify sets (like outfits or films), familiarity with the standard 'Number + Classifier + Noun' structure is necessary to use it correctly in a sentence.
