Choosing the or Word

Level 2

In Vietnamese, the English word "or" translates to either hay or hoặc depending on the type of sentence.

How It Works

English uses "or" for everything, but Vietnamese splits it into two distinct grammatical functions, though the lines can blur in casual speech.

1. Hay (The Question "Or")
Use hay in direct questions where you want the listener to choose between options (A or B?). You also use it for indirect questions or internal debate (meaning "whether A or B"). A common structure for this is có... hay không (whether or not). While traditionally the rule is to use hay only for questions, in everyday spoken Vietnamese, it is very flexible and is frequently used in affirmative statements as well.

2. Hoặc (The Statement "Or")
Use hoặc in declarative statements to list possibilities. It simply states facts, rules, or available options without asking anyone to make a choice. It sounds more formal and is the standard choice for written or official contexts. You can also use the paired structure Either ... Or ... to emphasize "either A or B".

Adding "là"
You can attach the word To Be to both words (hay là, hoặc là) to make them sound slightly softer and more conversational. However, hay là has an additional, distinct usage: when placed at the beginning of a clause, it means "How about...?" or "Why don't we...?" to make a suggestion.

Note: Be careful not to confuse the conjunction hay with its identical twins: the adjective meaning "good/interesting" (as in phim hay) or the adverb meaning "often" (as in Often).

Examples (4)

  1. Bạn muốn uống cà phê hay trà?

Do you want to drink coffee or tea?

Word by Word: Friend want drink coffee or tea?

Hay is used because this is a direct question asking the listener to make a choice.

  2. Bạn có thể chọn cà phê hoặc trà.

You can choose coffee or tea.

Word by Word: Friend have ability choose coffee or tea.

Hoặc is used because this is a statement of available options, not a question.

  3. Mình không biết nên đi ăn hay đi xem phim.

I don't know whether I should go eat or go watch a movie.

Word by Word: I not know should go eat or go watch movie.

Even though there is no question mark, hay is required because the speaker is expressing internal uncertainty (whether A or B).

  4. Cuối tuần tôi thường đọc sách hoặc là nghe nhạc.

On weekends, I usually read books or listen to music.

Word by Word: Weekend I usually read book or be listen music.

Adding là to hoặc makes the statement sound a bit more conversational.

Common Mistakes

  • Using "hoặc" when asking someone to choose between options.

    Bạn thích chó hoặc mèo?
    Bạn thích chó hay mèo?

English speakers often default to one word for 'or', but in a question that asks someone to choose, hay is the normal word. Hoặc is used for options in statements.
