ngoài ... ra

Apart from

Level 3

The pattern ngoài ... ra wraps around a noun or verb phrase to set aside a piece of information before delivering the main clause. It translates to 'apart from', 'besides', or 'except for'.

How It Works

To understand how ngoài ... ra functions, look at the basic structure and the second half of the sentence:

Basic Formula & Position:
The most fundamental usage is with nouns or pronouns: ngoài + [Noun/Pronoun] + ra (e.g., ngoài tôi ra - except for me). This block typically sits at the very beginning of the sentence for both additive ('in addition to') and exclusive ('except for') meanings: Ngoài + [X] + ra, [Subject] + [Verb]. However, it can also sit at the end of the sentence, particularly for exclusive meanings: [Subject] + [Verb] + ngoài + [X] + ra (e.g., Tôi không quen ai ở bữa tiệc đó ngoài Helen ra - I don't know anyone at that party except for Helen). The position itself does not determine the meaning; the context words do.

Using 'thì' for Smooth Transitions:
In spoken Vietnamese, native speakers frequently add the linking particle thì right after ra to smoothly transition to the main clause (e.g., Ngoài việc học ra thì tôi còn đi làm - Besides studying, I also work).

Additive vs. Exclusive:

  • Additive (In addition to): If the main clause contains words like còn (still/also) or cũng (also), the pattern means 'besides' or 'in addition to'.
  • Exclusive (Except for): If the main clause contains negative or limiting words like không ai (no one), không có gì (nothing), or chỉ (only), it means 'except for'.

Attaching to Verbs:
You can attach this pattern directly to a bare verb in standard, neutral Vietnamese (e.g., ngoài học ra). While you can nominalize the verb using the word việc (e.g., ngoài việc học ra) to sound slightly more formal, it is not strictly required.

Standalone Conjunction:
You can also use Ngoài ra at the beginning of a sentence as a standalone conjunction meaning 'Besides that', 'Furthermore', or 'In addition' to connect two related thoughts. Note that in written Vietnamese, it is almost always followed by a comma (Ngoài ra, ...).

A Common Myth & When to use 'trừ ... ra':
Some resources claim that ngoài ... ra ONLY means 'in addition to' and that you must use trừ ... ra for 'except'. This is false. Native speakers use ngoài ... ra frequently for both addition and exclusion. However, because ngoài ... ra relies heavily on context, trừ ... ra is the dedicated, strictly exclusive alternative used when the context might be ambiguous.

Dropping 'ra':
Omitting ra is a perfectly standard, grammatically correct variation used in both formal writing and careful speech (e.g., ngoài tiếng Anh, tôi còn biết tiếng Trung). While keeping it helps close the grammatical bracket, dropping it is widely accepted.

Examples (4)

  1. Ngoài tiếng Anh ra, tôi còn biết tiếng Trung.

Besides English, I also know Chinese.

Word by Word: Apart from English out, I still know language Chinese.

An additive example. The presence of 'còn' in the main clause shows that Chinese is in addition to English.

  2. Ngoài tôi ra, không ai trong lớp làm được bài đó.

Except for me, no one in the class could do that exercise.

Word by Word: Apart from me out, not anyone inside class do manage exercise that.

An exclusive example. The phrase 'không ai' (no one) shows that the speaker is the only exception.

  3. Ngoài việc đi làm ra, cô ấy còn thích chơi thể thao.

Apart from working, she also likes playing sports.

Word by Word: Apart from act of go work out, aunt that still like play sport.

Notice how 'việc' is used to turn the verb phrase 'đi làm' (to work) into a noun phrase so it can fit inside the bracket.

  4. Ngoài phở ra, tôi không ăn được món gì khác.

Except for pho, I can't eat any other dish.

Word by Word: Apart from pho out, I not eat manage dish what other.

Another exclusive example, using a negative main clause to show that pho is the only thing the speaker can eat.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'trừ ... ra' for an additive meaning.

Trừ tiếng Anh ra, tôi còn biết tiếng Trung.
Ngoài tiếng Anh ra, tôi còn biết tiếng Trung.

The pattern 'trừ ... ra' is strictly exclusive and means 'except for'. If you want to say 'in addition to' or 'besides', you must use 'ngoài ... ra'.

  • Forgetting to use context words like 'còn' or 'cũng' to show addition.

Ngoài tiếng Anh ra, tôi biết tiếng Trung.
Ngoài tiếng Anh ra, tôi còn biết tiếng Trung.

This sentence is natural, but because ngoài ... ra can mean both 'in addition to' and 'except for', a listener may be unsure which you mean. Adding còn (still/also) or cũng (also) in the main clause makes the sense 'besides' clear.

Learn This First

To understand 'ngoài ... ra', you first need to know the basic spatial meaning of 'ngoài' (outside) and how 'ra' functions as a directional particle indicating outward movement. This pattern uses these spatial concepts to create a logical frame that 'sets aside' or 'excludes' a specific item from a statement.
