phản + Noun

Anti- or Counter-

Level 5

The prefix phản- means "anti-" or "counter-". It attaches to Sino-Vietnamese words to show active opposition, reversal, or reaction.

How It Works

Although Vietnamese is often described as having no affixes, modern linguistics recognizes highly productive derivational prefixes borrowed from Chinese. Phản- (from the character 反) is one of the most common.

1. Meaning and Nuance
Phản- implies an active reaction, reversal, or direct opposition. It is highly productive in forming compound nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

2. Register and Usage
While its origins are formal, academic, and scientific, many phản- compounds are firmly embedded in everyday speech:

  • phản tác dụng (counterproductive)
  • phản ứng (to react / reaction)
  • phản cảm (offensive / distasteful)

3. Neutral vs. Negative Connotations
Because learners frequently encounter it in words like phản bội (to betray) or phản động (reactionary), they often assume it inherently means something "bad". However, in scientific terminology, it simply means "reverse" or "return" without any negative judgment (e.g., phản xạ - reflex; phản vật chất - antimatter).

4. Contrast with Phi-
Do not confuse phản- with phi + X. Phi- denotes the absence of a quality (non-/un-), whereas phản- denotes active opposition. For example, phi khoa học means "unscientific" (lacking scientific basis), whereas phản khoa học means "anti-science" (actively going against scientific principles).

5. Homophone Alert: Cái Phản
Be aware that as a standalone noun, cái phản refers to a traditional wooden plank bed. This comes from a completely different Chinese character (板 - board/plank) and is unrelated to the prefix meaning "anti-" or "counter-".

Examples (5)

  1. Hành động này hoàn toàn phản tác dụng.

    This action is completely counterproductive.

Word by Word: Action this completely counter- effect.

A very common everyday usage where 'phản' attaches to 'tác dụng' (effect/use) to mean 'counterproductive'.

  2. Nhiều sinh viên đã xuống đường tham gia phong trào phản chiến.

Many students took to the streets to join the anti-war movement.

Word by Word: Many student past go down street join movement anti- war.

Here, 'phản' attaches to 'chiến' (war) to form 'anti-war', demonstrating its use in political and historical contexts.

  3. Trang phục của cô ấy gây phản cảm cho khán giả.

Her outfit caused offense/distaste to the audience.

Word by Word: Outfit belonging to aunt that cause counter- feeling for audience.

'Phản cảm' literally means 'reverse feeling', used to describe something that is distasteful, offensive, or inappropriate.

  4. Trong vật lý, phản vật chất là một khái niệm quan trọng.

In physics, antimatter is an important concept.

Word by Word: Inside physics, anti- matter is one concept important.

Demonstrates the completely neutral, scientific use of 'phản-' to mean 'anti-' (antimatter).

  5. Cảnh sát đã kịp thời phản ứng trước tình huống nguy hiểm.

The police reacted promptly to the dangerous situation.

Word by Word: Police past in time counter- respond before situation dangerous.

'Phản ứng' (react/reaction) is one of the most frequent 'phản-' compounds in both formal and casual Vietnamese.

Common Mistakes

  • Attaching 'phản-' to native Vietnamese words to coin new terms.

Đội bóng đang chuẩn bị phản đánh.
Đội bóng đang chuẩn bị phản công.

Phản- is a bound morpheme that almost exclusively attaches to Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary. You cannot attach it to a native Vietnamese word like đánh (to hit/attack). You must use the Sino-Vietnamese equivalent công to form phản công (counter-attack).

  • Using 'phản' as a standalone verb to mean 'to oppose'.

Tôi phản ý kiến của anh ấy.
Tôi phản đối ý kiến của anh ấy.

Learners often try to use phản as a standalone verb meaning 'to oppose'. However, when used as a standalone colloquial verb, phản actually means 'to betray' (e.g., Nó phản tôi = He betrayed me). To say 'oppose', you must use the full compound phản đối.
