mà thôi

And Nothing More

Level 4

Only / Merely / That's all

How It Works

As a final particle, mà thôi sits at the absolute end of a clause or sentence to limit its scope.

It is highly correlative, meaning it almost always pairs with a limiting word earlier in the sentence to form a frame:

  • chỉ + [predicate] + mà thôi (only... that's all)
  • chẳng qua là + [predicate] + mà thôi (it's merely that...)
  • [noun] + duy nhất + mà thôi (the only one)
  • chỉ có + [noun/pronoun/condition] + mới + [predicate] + mà thôi (only [under this condition/by this person])
  • (chỉ) có + [noun/quantity] + mà thôi (only have...)

Nuance and Register:
While thôi by itself can mean 'only', adding mà makes the statement slightly more formal, literary, or emphatic. It is often used to soften a claim, convey modesty, express resignation, or state a simple, exclusive fact. In casual, everyday spoken Vietnamese, the mà is usually dropped, leaving just the frame chỉ + [predicate] + thôi.

Important Distinctions:
Do not confuse mà thôi with thôi mà. At the beginning of a sentence, thôi mà is a placating phrase ('Come on, it's okay' or 'Please stop'). However, when thôi mà appears at the absolute end of a sentence (e.g., Tôi chỉ đùa thôi mà!), it acts as a defensive or justifying particle meaning '...only/just, I swear!' or '...only/just, you know.' In contrast, as a final particle, mà thôi means 'that is all'.

Additionally, be aware that mà thôi is also heavily used as a mid-sentence conjunction or interjection (often short for nhưng mà thôi) meaning 'but never mind' or 'but forget it' (e.g., Tôi định mua, mà thôi, đắt quá. - I intended to buy it, but never mind, it's too expensive).

Examples (4)

  1. Tôi chỉ muốn giúp đỡ mà thôi.

I just want to help, that's all.

Word by Word: I only want help that's all.

A classic example of the 'chỉ ... mà thôi' frame, often used to convey modesty or pure intentions.

  2. Anh ấy không giận, chỉ là mệt mà thôi.

He's not angry, he's merely tired.

Word by Word: He not angry, only is tired that's all.

Used to state a simple, exclusive fact, ruling out other possibilities.

  3. Đó chỉ là ý kiến cá nhân của tôi mà thôi.

That is strictly my personal opinion.

Word by Word: That only is opinion personal of me that's all.

Softens the statement by shrinking the claim to just a personal view.

  4. Chẳng qua là tôi quên mang tiền mà thôi.

It's merely that I forgot to bring money, that's all.

Word by Word: Merely is I forget bring money that's all.

Pairs with 'chẳng qua là' to emphasize that the reason is simple and nothing more serious.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing the particle immediately after the verb rather than at the end of the sentence.

Tôi chỉ muốn mà thôi giúp đỡ.
Tôi chỉ muốn giúp đỡ mà thôi.

mà thôi is a sentence-final particle. It must be placed at the absolute end of the clause or sentence it modifies, not directly after the verb.

Learn This First

The pattern 'mà thôi' is a sentence-final emphatic marker used to minimize or restrict a claim. It is functionally dependent on the concept of 'only' (chỉ) and the standalone use of 'thôi' to indicate a limit or stopping point.
