bao giờ cũng
Always Without Fail
Bao giờ cũng means always or without fail. It is a strong expression used to describe habits, traits, or facts that are true no matter what.
How It Works
While bao giờ is commonly used as a question word meaning 'when?', in this pattern it functions as an indefinite pronoun meaning 'any time'. When paired with cũng (also), it creates a universal statement: 'at any time, it is also true'.
Structure:
This pattern can be ordered in two ways without changing the meaning:
- ([Subject]) + bao giờ cũng + [Verb/Adjective]
- Bao giờ + ([Subject]) + cũng + [Verb/Adjective]
Note that because Vietnamese frequently drops pronouns, the subject can be omitted if it is understood from context. If the predicate is a noun, the copula verb là (to be) must immediately follow cũng. For example: Bao giờ anh ấy cũng là người đến muộn. (He is always the one who arrives late).
Nuance and Usage:
Use this pattern when you want to assert an unbreakable rule or a highly predictable pattern. It carries a stronger mood of inevitability than the standard adverbs luôn luôn or luôn (always). While luôn can physically follow a verb, doing so changes its meaning to 'immediately', 'right away', or 'at the same time' (as in the Verb + luôn pattern). Luôn luôn, unlike luôn, cannot follow the verb to mean 'immediately'. In contrast to these adverbs, this pattern (and specifically the word cũng) must always precede the verb or adjective. You will also frequently encounter lúc nào cũng and khi nào cũng as synonymous structures. However, lúc nào cũng is generally more frequent in casual spoken Vietnamese, while bao giờ cũng is slightly more emphatic or formal. Additionally, this pattern is tense-independent; it can be used for past habits, present facts, or future certainties. You will also frequently hear the standalone fixed phrases bao giờ cũng vậy or bao giờ cũng thế (meaning 'it is always like that' or 'it's always the same'), where vậy and thế act as demonstrative pronouns, as well as bao giờ cũng được (meaning 'anytime is fine' or 'whenever').
Negation:
To say 'not always', you cannot simply add không. You must use the phrase không phải bao giờ cũng (literally: 'it is not the case that it is always'). Be careful: using không bao giờ means 'never' (as a general fact or habit), and chưa bao giờ means 'has never' (past experience). Confusing these with 'not always' is a common trap for English speakers.

Common Mistakes
Dropping 'cũng' and accidentally asking a question.
Different MeaningAnh ấy bao giờ đến lớp trễ?Anh ấy bao giờ cũng đến lớp trễ.'Anh ấy bao giờ đến lớp trễ?' is a correct question meaning 'When is he late to class?'. Because English uses a single word ('always'), learners may place 'bao giờ' alone before a verb. Without 'cũng', 'bao giờ' keeps its question meaning ('when?'). To say 'always', use 'bao giờ cũng'.
Negating the pattern incorrectly to say 'not always'.
Thời tiết không bao giờ cũng tốt.Thời tiết không phải bao giờ cũng tốt.To say 'not always', you cannot say 'không bao giờ cũng' (which is ungrammatical). You must use 'không phải bao giờ cũng', meaning 'it is not the case that it is always'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'bao giờ cũng', you first need to know the question word 'bao giờ' (when) and the particle 'cũng' (also). This pattern combines them to create a strong form of 'always' (literally 'whenever also').
