I Wish: Koshki and Qani Edi

Level 4

Koshki or qani edi + a verb in -sa or -sa edi = if only, I wish: Koshki u kelsa edi (if only he would come).

How It Works

1. Koshki
Koshki shows the speaker longs for what the sentence describes. It usually comes first, and the verb takes -sa edi or -sa: Koshki u ham shu yerda boʻlsa edi (If only she were here too). You may also hear koshki edi or the joined form koshkiydi.

2. Qani edi and qani endi
On its own, qani asks where something is, like qayerda: Kitobim qani? (Where's my book?). It can also mean come on: Qani, kiring! (Come on in!). With edi or endi after it, it opens a wish, usually followed by a comma: Qani edi, hozir yoz boʻlsa! (If only it were summer now!)

3. Wishes about the past
For something that did not happen, use -gan boʻlsa edi: Koshki buni oldinroq bilgan boʻlsam edi (If only I had known this earlier).

4. The verb does the work
The wish word adds feeling, but the grammar is carried by -sa. Without the wish word, kelsa edi still means if only he would come; with it, the wish sounds stronger. A wish can also lead into what would happen: Qani endi, vaqtim boʻlsa, kitob oʻqirdim (If only I had time, I would read books).

Examples (6)

  1. Koshki u ham shu yerda boʻlsa edi.

If only she were here too.

Word by Word: If-only she too this place-at if-were was.

  2. Qani edi, hozir yoz boʻlsa!

If only it were summer now!

Word by Word: Where was, now summer if-were!

  3. Qani endi, vaqtim koʻproq boʻlsa!

I wish I had more time!

Word by Word: Where now, time-my more if-were!

Qani endi is a common variant of qani edi.

  4. Koshki buni oldinroq bilgan boʻlsam edi.

If only I had known this earlier.

Word by Word: If-only this-(obj.) earlier known if-were-I was.

-gan boʻlsa edi looks back at something that did not happen.

  5. Koshki ertaga yomgʻir yogʻmasa.

I really hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.

Word by Word: If-only tomorrow rain if-not-rains.

  6. Koshki edi, bolaligimga qaytsam!

If only I could go back to my childhood!

    Word by Word: If-only was, childhood-my-to if-return-I!

Common Mistakes

  • Using a plain present-future verb after koshki.

    Koshki u keladi.
    Koshki u kelsa edi.

Koshki does not change the verb for you. The verb must be in -sa or -sa edi.

  • Using bor after qani edi.

    Qani edi, pulim bor.
    Qani edi, pulim boʻlsa.

Pulim bor states a fact: I have money. A wish needs the -sa form of boʻlmoq: pulim boʻlsa.
