boʻlsa

As for: Boʻlsa

Level 4

Word + boʻlsa = as for...: Men boʻlsam, uyda qolaman (As for me, I will stay home). Hamma ketdi, Anvar boʻlsa hali ishlayapti (Everyone left, but Anvar is still working).

How It Works

Use boʻlsa when you turn to a new topic that differs from the one before: as for me, while she, but now.

1. Where it goes
boʻlsa follows the word it highlights, usually a person, a thing or a time word, and the rest of the sentence comes after it: Akam shifokor, opam boʻlsa oʻqituvchi (My older brother is a doctor, and my older sister is a teacher).

2. Person endings
After a personal pronoun, boʻlsa usually takes the ending of the -sa form that matches it:

  • men boʻlsam (as for me)
  • sen boʻlsang (as for you)
  • u boʻlsa (as for him or her)
  • biz boʻlsak (as for us)
  • siz boʻlsangiz (as for you, polite)

After a noun, it stays boʻlsa: Anvar boʻlsa, hozir boʻlsa (but now).

3. Not a condition
The verb after it is an ordinary verb, not an if-clause: Men boʻlsam, uyda qolaman means as for me, I will stay home, not if I am. In Bu boʻlsa, boshqa gap (Now this is another matter), boʻlsa sets this apart from whatever was said before.

4. boʻlsa and esa
esa does the same job after a word and never changes form. Put only one of them after the same word: Men boʻlsam or Men esa. You will hear boʻlsa very often in conversation, and esa is also common in writing. In writing, you will also meet boʻlsa at the end of a whole first clause, with esa in the second one, to mean whereas: Akam shifokor boʻlsa, opam esa oʻqituvchi.

Examples (6)

  1. Men boʻlsam, uyda qolaman.

As for me, I will stay home.

    Word by Word: I as-for-me, at-home I-will-stay.

  2. Akam shifokor, opam boʻlsa oʻqituvchi.

My older brother is a doctor, and my older sister is a teacher.

Word by Word: Brother-my doctor, sister-my as-for teacher.

  3. Hamma ketdi, Anvar boʻlsa hali ham ishlayapti.

Everyone left, but Anvar is still working.

Word by Word: Everyone left, Anvar as-for still working-is.

  4. Bu boʻlsa, boshqa gap.

Now that is a different matter.

Word by Word: This as-for, other talk.

boʻlsa sets this apart from what was said before: this one is a different matter.

  5. Biz boʻlsak, ertaga yoʻlga chiqamiz.

As for us, we set off tomorrow.

Word by Word: We as-for-us, tomorrow road-to we-go-out.

  6. Oldin bu yerda bogʻ bor edi, hozir boʻlsa katta bino turibdi.

There used to be a garden here, but now a big building stands here.

Word by Word: Before here garden there-was, now as-for big building stands.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting boʻlsa before the word it highlights.

Hamma ketdi, boʻlsa Anvar hali ham ishlayapti.
Hamma ketdi, Anvar boʻlsa hali ham ishlayapti.

boʻlsa is not a conjunction like but. It always follows the word it makes the topic: Anvar boʻlsa.

  • Using esa and boʻlsa together.

    Men esa boʻlsam, uyda qolaman.
    Men boʻlsam, uyda qolaman.

esa and boʻlsa do the same job after a word, so one of them is enough: Men boʻlsam, uyda qolaman or Men esa uyda qolaman.
