na + Simple Present

Used to: Na + Simple Present

Level 3

Na + simple present = used to: Na mekɔ sukuu da biara (I used to go to school every day).

How It Works

1. The pattern
Na + subject + plain present verb. The verb is exactly as in the Simple Present.

  • Mekɔ sukuu da biara. (I go to school every day.)
  • Na mekɔ sukuu da biara. (I used to go to school every day.)

2. Words that help
Habit words such as da biara (every day), Memeneda biara (every Saturday) or taa make the used-to meaning clear: Na ɔtaa ba ha (She used to come here often).

3. The same na for states
This is the same na that puts a state in the past (Past States With na): Na mete Kumase (I lived in Kumasi). With an action verb and a habit word, it means used to.

4. Three pasts compared

  • Simple past, one finished event: Mekɔɔ sukuu nnɛra (I went to school yesterday).
  • Na + present, a past habit: Na mekɔ sukuu da biara (I used to go to school every day).
  • Na + re-, something in progress: Na merekɔ sukuu (I was going to school). See Was Doing.

5. Negative
Keep na and make the verb negative: Na yɛnnom kɔfe (We did not use to drink coffee).

Examples (5)

  1. Na mekɔ sukuu da biara.

I used to go to school every day.

  2. Na me maame tɔn nkwan wɔ dwam.

My mother used to sell soup at the market.

  3. Na Kofi bɔ bɔɔl Memeneda biara.

Kofi used to play football every Saturday.

    Bɔ bɔɔl means play football.

  4. Na ɔtaa ba ha.

She used to come here often.

    Taa (often) underlines the habit.

  5. Na yɛnnom kɔfe.

We did not use to drink coffee.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out na.

Mekɔ sukuu da biara. (meaning I used to)
    Na mekɔ sukuu da biara.

Without na, the sentence describes a habit now: I go to school every day. Na puts the habit in the past.

  • Putting na after the subject.

Me na mekɔ sukuu da biara. (meaning I used to go)
    Na mekɔ sukuu da biara.

Na right after a word puts focus on it: Me na mekɔ sukuu da biara means I am the one who goes to school every day. For used to, na comes first.
