gye sɛ (Unless)

Unless: Gye Sɛ

Level 5

Gye sɛ + condition = unless: Merenkɔ gye sɛ wobɛba. (I will not go unless you come.)

How It Works

1. The pattern
Main clause + gye sɛ + condition. The main clause is usually negative, often with the Will Not: re- + N-:

  • Merenkɔ gye sɛ wobɛba. (I will not go unless you come.)
  • Mentua, gye sɛ me nsa ka. (I won't pay unless I receive it.)

2. The verb after gye sɛ
The condition is often in the future with bɛ- (gye sɛ wobɛba) or in the plain form (gye sɛ wobisa me). It is usually positive, because the negative idea is already in the main clause.

3. Gye alone: except
Before a noun, gye by itself means except. The Adinkra name Gye Nyame means Except God (see Adinkra Symbol Names). You will also hear the longer forms agye and agye sɛ.

4. Gye sɛ or sɛ ... a?
Sɛ wobɛba a, mɛkɔ means If you come, I will go. Merenkɔ gye sɛ wobɛba means I will not go unless you come. Using sɛ ... a with a negative main clause gives the opposite meaning: Merenkɔ sɛ wobɛba a means I will not go if you come.

5. Keep apart
Gye is also the ordinary verb take or receive, as in Split Verbs: gye ... di. Only gye sɛ before a clause means unless. For a condition that changes nothing, use Even If: sɛ ... mpo a.

Examples (5)

  1. Merenkɔ gye sɛ wobɛba.

I will not go unless you come.

The main clause is negative, and gye sɛ names the one condition that would change it.

  2. Mentua, gye sɛ me nsa ka.

    I won't pay unless I receive it.

Word by Word: I-not-pay, except that my hand touches

Me nsa ka (my hand touches it) means I receive it.

  3. Wontumi nkɔ, gye sɛ wo maame ma wo kwan.

You can't go unless your mother gives you permission.

Ma ... kwan (give ... way) means allow. Both verbs in wontumi nkɔ are negative.

  4. Merenkasa gye sɛ wobisa me.

I will not speak unless you ask me.

The condition can use the plain form of the verb.

  5. Gye Nyame.

    Except God.

The name of an Adinkra symbol. Before a noun, gye alone means except.

Common Mistakes

  • Using sɛ ... a (if) where unless is meant.

    Merenkɔ sɛ wobɛba a.
    Merenkɔ gye sɛ wobɛba.

Merenkɔ sɛ wobɛba a means I will not go if you come, the opposite of the intended meaning. To say unless, use gye sɛ.
