me din de

My Name Is: Me Din De

Level 1

Say your name with Me din de: Me din de Ama (My name is Ama).

How It Works

The phrase has three parts: a possessive, din (name) and the verb de (be called). The name comes last: Me din de Ama (My name is Ama), literally "My name is called Ama".

Whose name. Change the possessive to talk about others: Wo din (your name), Ne din de Kwame (His name is Kwame). Any owner can go first: Me maame din de Akosua (My mother's name is Akosua); see possession by placement. It works for places and things too: Ghana ahenkuro din de sɛn? (What is the name of Ghana's capital?)

Asking. Twi asks how a name is called, using sɛn (how): Wo din de sɛn? (What is your name?). Answer with Me din de and your name, and turn the question back with Na wo nso ɛ? (And you?).

Another way. You can also say Wɔfrɛ me Ama (They call me Ama). Both are common.

Day names. Many names you will hear, such as Kofi, Ama and Kwame, show the day of the week a person was born; see days of the week.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out de.

    Me din Ama.
    Me din de Ama.

De is the verb of the sentence. Without it, the words do not say that your name is Ama.

  • Mixing up me (my) and ne (his, her) when giving your own name.

    Ne din de Ama.
    Me din de Ama.

Ne din de Ama means "Her name is Ama". For your own name, start with me.
