How with Vipi

Level 1

Vipi is a very common Swahili word that means how. You can use it after an action to ask how something is done, or use it on its own as a casual greeting like 'What's up?'

How It Works

1. Asking 'How' (Adverb of Manner)
To ask how an action is performed, place vipi after the verb, typically at the end of the sentence (after the object if there is one). The prefix vi- is often used to create adverbs of manner in Swahili, so vipi literally translates to 'in which way' or 'in which manner'.

  • Unasoma vipi? (How are you reading?)
  • Ulipika chakula vipi? (How did you cook the food?)

2. The Casual Greeting
Vipi? or Mambo vipi? is the most common way friends and peers say 'What's up?' or 'How are things?' in Swahili. In casual speech, you can also place it at the beginning of a phrase to mean 'How about...' or 'How is...' (e.g., Vipi hali? or Vipi wewe?). To reply, you can use common casual responses like Poa (Cool), Safi (Clean/Good), Freshi (Fresh), or Sawasawa (Okay). Note that this is a casual street greeting. You should use standard greetings like Shikamoo or Hujambo with elders or authority figures.

3. Vipi vs. Other Question Words

  • The suffix -je: The suffix -je also means 'how', but it must be physically attached to the end of a verb (e.g., Unaendeleaje?). Vipi is a separate word (e.g., Unaendelea vipi?). Furthermore, -je cannot be used as a standalone greeting.
  • Which or What Kind gani: Use gani to ask 'what kind' or 'which' generally (e.g., kitabu gani = which book). Note that vipi is also the specific Class 8 agreement for 'Which with -pi' (e.g., vitabu vipi? = which books?). When used as an adverb for an action, it means 'how'.

Examples (4)

  1. Mambo vipi?

What's up? / How are things?

    Word by Word: Things how?

This is the most common casual greeting among peers in Swahili.

  2. Unaendelea vipi?

How are you doing? / How are you progressing?

Word by Word: You are continuing how?

Here, vipi acts as an adverb modifying the verb 'unaendelea'.

  3. Utaenda sokoni vipi?

How will you go to the market?

Word by Word: You will go to market how?

Vipi is placed at the end of the sentence to ask by what means the action will happen.

  4. Mlipata habari hizi vipi?

How did you all get this news?

Word by Word: You all got news these how?

Notice that vipi comes after the object (habari hizi) and stays exactly the same regardless of who is doing the action.

Common Mistakes

  • Using English word order by putting vipi at the beginning of a standard 'how' question.

    Vipi utaenda sokoni?
    Utaenda sokoni vipi?

In standard Swahili, the question word vipi usually comes at the end of the sentence or clause when asking 'how' an action is done. Placing it at the beginning is only correct in casual speech when asking 'How about...' or 'How is...' (like 'Vipi wewe?').

  • Using vipi to greet elders or authority figures.

    Vipi, mwalimu?
    Shikamoo, mwalimu.

Vipi is a highly casual greeting used among friends and peers. Using it with elders or teachers is considered disrespectful.
