kati ya
Between or Among
Kati ya is used to express "between" two distinct things or "among" a group of things.
How It Works
The phrase kati ya is formed by the invariable noun kati and the class 9 associative marker ya.
1. Between Two Things:
When expressing "between", you must connect the two items with the na conjunction (and). For example: kati ya nyumba na mti (between the house and the tree).
2. Among a Group:
While kati ya can be used to mean "among" a group (like kati ya wanafunzi), Swahili has a dedicated and often preferred phrase for "among": miongoni mwa.
3. With Pronouns:
When used with personal pronouns, the associative marker ya changes into a class 9 possessive pronoun that follows kati as a separate word. To say "between [Pronoun] and [Something else]", use the possessive for the first item, followed by na, and then the independent pronoun or noun for the second item:
- kati yangu na wewe (between me and you)
- kati yako na yeye (between you and him/her)
- kati yake na mti (between him/her and the tree)
- kati yetu (between/among us)
- kati yenu (between/among you all)
- kati yao (between/among them)
4. Ratios and Fractions:
kati ya is the standard way to express "out of" for statistics and fractions. For example: mmoja kati ya watu kumi (one out of ten people).
5. Expressing Time:
You can also use kati ya to express a time range. For example: kati ya saa mbili na saa tatu (between 8:00 and 9:00).
Note: You will frequently hear the Arabic-derived synonym baina ya, which is used interchangeably with kati ya. Also, do not confuse these with katikati ya, which means "in the middle of" a single, continuous space (like a room or a city).
