mientras + Indicative/Subjunctive

While/As Long as

Level 4

Mientras cocino, escucho música describes a habit. Mientras cocines mañana, yo pondré la mesa anticipates an overlapping future action. Mientras lo cuides, puedes usarlo adds an as-long-as condition.

How It Works

Overlapping Time
Mientras can mean while or during the time that. With an ordinary statement of a habit or past situation, use indicative: Mientras estudio, mi hermano ve la tele. The imperfect presents an ongoing past background: Mientras caminábamos por el parque, empezó a llover.

Anticipated Time
A future period commonly takes present subjunctive: Mientras cocines mañana, yo pondré la mesa (While you cook tomorrow, I will set the table). The actions still overlap in time. Do not replace cocines with future cocinarás in this temporal clause.

An Added Condition
Mientras with subjunctive can add the sense as long as: Puedes usar mi coche mientras lo cuides bien. The permission holds on the condition of taking care of it. Temporal duration and condition often overlap rather than being completely separate meanings.

Context Matters
Mientras estés aquí, ayuda con las tareas can address someone who is already here; subjunctive does not deny that person's presence. Likewise, indicative is not restricted to what is happening at this exact moment. Identify the temporal or conditional construction and its viewpoint.

Contrastive Mientras Que
Mientras que can also contrast situations, like whereas. In that contrasting use, the clauses use indicative. It also has a temporal use in several varieties, so que alone does not settle the meaning.

Examples (5)

  1. Mientras cocino, siempre escucho la radio.

While I cook, I always listen to the radio.

Word by Word: While I cook, always I listen to the radio.

Indicative ('cocino') is used because it describes two simultaneous, factual actions happening in the present.

  2. El niño lloraba mientras su madre lo bañaba.

The child was crying while his mother was bathing him.

Word by Word: The child was crying while his mother him was bathing.

Imperfect indicative ('bañaba') is used to describe two ongoing, simultaneous actions in the past.

  3. Puedes quedarte con el libro mientras lo necesites.

You can keep the book for as long as you need it.

Word by Word: You can keep yourself with the book while it you need.

Necesites frames the continuing need for the book as the period and condition of keeping it. This illustrates the overlap between duration and an as-long-as condition, rather than a general substitute for provided that.

  4. Mientras haya esperanza, seguiremos luchando.

As long as there is hope, we will keep fighting.

Word by Word: As long as there is hope, we will continue fighting.

Subjunctive ('haya') is used because the existence of hope is the condition for the fighting to continue.

  5. Puedes comer lo que quieras mientras no dejes un desastre.

You can eat whatever you want as long as you don't leave a mess.

Word by Word: You can eat that which you want as long as not you leave a mess.

Subjunctive ('dejes') is used here to set a condition on the permission being granted in the main clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using future indicative in a temporal mientras clause about an anticipated period.

Mientras cocinarás mañana, yo pondré la mesa.
Mientras cocines mañana, yo pondré la mesa.

Use present subjunctive cocines in this future-time clause. It still means while you cook; the subjunctive does not require translating mientras as a separate permission condition.
