por
Por Uses
Por is a preposition used to talk about the reason for something, an exchange, or a period of time.
How It Works
The preposition 'por' is one of the most versatile in Spanish. At this level, we'll focus on three fundamental uses. Understanding these will help you avoid confusion with its counterpart, 'para'. The full distinction is covered in por vs para.
Here are the three key uses:
- Cause or Reason (Because of): 'Por' is used to explain the reason or motive behind an action. It answers the question "Why?".
Example: Lo hice por ti. (I did it for you / because of you.) - Exchange or Substitution (In exchange for): 'Por' indicates that one thing is being traded or substituted for another. This includes money for goods.
Example: Pagué 20 dólares por la camisa. (I paid 20 dollars for the shirt.) - Duration of Time (For): 'Por' is used to talk about the length of time an action takes place.
Example: Vivimos en México por dos años. (We lived in Mexico for two years.)
Duration with por is especially common in the Americas and is valid Spanish. Depending on context and regional preference, Estudié tres horas or Estudié durante tres horas can express the same duration. Por does not require a particular tense: an interval can be past, present or future. Lo hice por ti may mean for your sake as well as because of you; context chooses the reading.

Gracias por + noun or infinitive states the reason for thanking someone. Gracias a has a different construction, usually meaning thanks to.

'Por' is used here to show the substitution of one item for another.

Here, 'por' is used to express the duration of the vacation.
Common Mistakes
Using 'para' instead of 'por' to express cause or reason.
Gracias para la información.Gracias por la información.Use Gracias por la información to thank someone for information. Para does not mark the reason in this formula. Gracias a la información is a different construction, meaning thanks to the information, and normally needs a following outcome.
Using 'para' for exchanges involving money.
Pagué diez dólares para el libro.Pagué diez dólares por el libro.Por el libro identifies what the payment bought. Para el libro would instead suggest a purpose, such as money assigned to a book project; it is not the same purchase reading. This contrast does not mean every sentence about money requires por.

Compare por and para across their main constructions; their meanings cannot be reduced to a single English translation.
