iyo
Joining Nouns with Iyo
Iyo connects people, things, and other noun phrases.
How It Works
Place iyo between coordinated noun phrases. Two individual people form a subject with plural meaning and take plural agreement in an ordinary unfocused statement. Joining objects does not change the subject’s agreement. Compare Hodan iyo Cabdi way heesayaan, with two singers, and Waxaan haystaa qalin iyo buug, with two objects held by one speaker.
Commands can instead connect predicates with oo: Qor oo akhri!, “Write and read!” The distribution of iyo extends to complex numerals and noun-based subordinate clauses, including clauses beginning with in. Between some subordinate alternatives it corresponds to English “or.” Consequently, “only nouns, never clauses” would be too restrictive. Within coordinated subjects, apply subject marking to the phrase’s final word rather than marking every coordinated noun independently.
