-ba
Each and Inclusive Emphasis
bishiiba can mean “per month”; saddexduba can mean “all three.”
How It Works
-Ba attaches at the end of its host. Referential -ii followed by -ba occurs in frequency expressions, amounts per unit, and percentages. With a definite numeral, reinforcement can include every member of a group. The host retains its required subject marking.
A general expression such as meel kasta can receive inclusive reinforcement. This does not establish a rule that adding -ba to any noun creates “each.” Adjective reduplication distributes a quality through a different construction.
The negative function is illustrated by waxba, “nothing,” in a negative clause. Interpret that combination separately from affirmative reinforcement; the surrounding predicate still follows the relevant negation rules.
Examples (4)
- bishiiba laba jeer
twice each month
Frequency-phrase fragment with -ii plus -ba.
- Saddexduba way yimaadeen.
All three came.
The numeral retains subject marking before inclusive -ba.
- Meel kastaba waxaan ku arkay geedo.
Everywhere I saw trees.
Inclusive reinforcement of a general place expression.
- Waxba ma haysto.
I have nothing.
Negative waxba accompanies a negative predicate.

Recognize previous-reference -ii before interpreting its combination with -ba in frequency and per-unit expressions; distinguish these from inclusive and negative uses.
