aký / aká / aké
What Kind of: Aký
Use aký for what kind or what ... like. It agrees with the noun, like an adjective: Aký film? Aká izba? Aké počasie?
How It Works
Aký asks what something is like or what kind of thing it is. Choose the form that matches the noun:
- aký with masculine nouns: Aký je to film? (What kind of film is it?)
- aká with feminine nouns: Aká je tvoja izba? (What is your room like?)
- aké with neuter nouns: Aké je počasie? (What is the weather like?)
Aký also changes for case, with the same endings as pekný: akého, akej, akému, akú, akom, akým, akou. For example: Akú hudbu počúvaš? (What kind of music do you listen to?) V akom meste bývaš? (What town do you live in?)
In the plural, use aké for most nouns and akí for groups of men: Aké sú tie topánky? (What are those shoes like?) Akí sú tvoji susedia? (What are your neighbours like?)
Aký, ktorý or čo? Aký asks about qualities or type. Ktorý asks you to pick one from a known group. Čo stands alone for a thing and does not go in front of a noun: Čo čítaš? but Akú knihu čítaš?
Aký can also start an exclamation: Aký krásny deň! (What a beautiful day!)
