Understatement With a Double Negative

Level 6

When a negated verb meets a word that is itself negative (a ne- adjective or bez), the two cancel: To nie je nezaujímavé (That's not uninteresting) means it is actually quite interesting, said with caution.

How It Works

How it works. One negation is on the verb, the other is inside a word: nie je nemožné (it isn't impossible), nebol to nerozumný návrh (it wasn't an unreasonable proposal). The result is positive, but weaker and more careful than the plain word: nie je nezaujímavé is less than je zaujímavé, and it often sounds modest or ironic.

Not ordinary negative concord. In Slovak, negative words such as nikto, nič, nikdy need a negated verb, and the result is still negative (negative words). Those do not cancel. Understatement happens only with a word-level negation inside a sentence negation.

Common patterns.

  • nie + ne- word: nie nemožné, nie nezaujímavý, nie nepodobný
  • nie bez + genitive: nie bez dôvodu (not without reason), nezaobišlo sa to bez problémov (it didn't go without problems)
  • nejeden: literally not one, meaning many a, more than one: nejeden turista

Where you meet it. Understatement is common in essays, reviews and polite speech. Be careful: without the ne- prefix, the sentence is simply negative and means the opposite.

Examples (6)

  1. To nie je nezaujímavá myšlienka.

    That's not an uninteresting idea.

Word by Word: That not is un-interesting idea.

The speaker cautiously praises the idea.

  2. Nie bez dôvodu ho všetci chvália.

It is not without reason that everyone praises him.

Word by Word: Not without reason him all praise.

  3. Víťazstvo nie je nemožné.

    Victory is not impossible.

Word by Word: Victory not is impossible.

  4. Jeho návrh nie je nerozumný.

    His proposal isn't unreasonable.

Word by Word: His proposal not is unreasonable.

  5. Nejeden turista sa tu už stratil.

Many a tourist has already got lost here.

Word by Word: Not-one tourist himself here already lost.

Nejeden means more than one, many a.

  6. Nezaobišlo sa to bez problémov.

It didn't go off without problems.

Word by Word: Not-managed itself it without problems.

The meaning is: there were some problems.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping ne- and reversing the meaning.

    Také chyby nie sú zvyčajné.
    Také chyby nie sú nezvyčajné.

The intended meaning is such mistakes are not uncommon. Nie sú zvyčajné says they are not usual, which is the opposite. The ne- word is what makes the understatement.

  • Putting nie after the verb.

    To je nie nezaujímavé.
    To nie je nezaujímavé.

In understatement, the negation belongs to the verb: nie je. Nie before a single word is used for a contrast (nie ..., ale ...), not for this effect.

  • Using negative concord to mean that everybody saw something.

    Nikto nič nevidel.
    Každý niečo videl.

Nikto nič nevidel means nobody saw anything. Negative words with a negated verb stay negative; only ne- words and bez create understatement.
