Pronouns After s and o

Level 2

Poď so mnou. (Come with me.) Hovoríme o tebe. (We're talking about you.)

How It Works

Instrumental: s kým? (with whom?)

  • ja → so mnou
  • ty → s tebou
  • on, ono → s ním
  • ona → s ňou
  • my → s nami
  • vy → s vami
  • oni, ony → s nimi

Locative: o kom? (about whom?)

  • ja → o mne
  • ty → o tebe
  • on, ono → o ňom
  • ona → o nej
  • my → o nás
  • vy → o vás
  • oni, ony → o nich

Other prepositions. The instrumental forms also follow pred, za, nad, pod and medzi: pred tebou (in front of you), za nami (behind us). The locative forms follow v, na, po and pri: pri vás (near you).

No short forms after a preposition. Short forms like ho, mu, ju never follow a preposition. Say s ním, not s ho.

Easy to remember. Locative mne, tebe look like the long dative forms, and nás, vás look like the accusative.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the extra vowel before mnou.

    Poď s mnou.
    Poď so mnou.

Before mnou the preposition s is always written so.

  • Using the subject pronoun after o.

    Hovorili sme o on.
    Hovorili sme o ňom.

After o the pronoun must be in the locative: on becomes ňom.

  • Using a short form after s.

Bol som v kine s ju.
Bol som v kine s ňou.

Ju is an accusative short form. After s you need the instrumental ňou.
