Old Address Forms

Level 4

When you call or address someone, use the nominative: Peter, poď sem! (Peter, come here!), Pán doktor, máte chvíľku? (Doctor, do you have a moment?).

How It Works

Addressing someone. Slovak uses the ordinary nominative for names and titles: Peter, poď sem! Jana, počkaj! Pán Novák, máte chvíľku? This is one reason Slovak is taught with six cases, not seven. Czech is different here, so do not borrow Czech forms like Petře.

The old forms that survive. A few words keep a special address form ending in -e or -u:

  • pane — sir: Pane, môžem vám pomôcť? This is the only one that sounds completely neutral.
  • Bože — God, also in exclamations: Bože môj!
  • človeče — man, you!: Človeče, čo to robíš?
  • chlapče — boy; synku — son; priateľu — friend; majstre — to an artist or craftsman
  • in prayers: Otče (Father), Pane (Lord)

Apart from pane, these sound old-fashioned, warm, ironic or religious, and they are used mostly on their own. With a name or a title, use the nominative: pán doktor, pán Kováč (see pán and pani).

Everyday speech. Families and friends often shorten names and kinship words with -i: mami, oci, babi, Zuzi. These are colloquial and fine among friends, but they are not Standard Slovak. See colloquial versus standard forms.

In letters. Formal letters start with the nominative too: Vážený pán riaditeľ, (see formal letters).

Examples (6)

  1. Peter, poď sem!

    Peter, come here!

Word by Word: Peter, come here!

    A name in the nominative.

  2. Pán doktor, máte chvíľku?

Doctor, do you have a moment?

Word by Word: Mr doctor, you-have moment?

  3. Pane, môžem vám pomôcť?

    Sir, may I help you?

Word by Word: Sir(voc.), I-can you help?

Pane is the old address form of pán.

  4. Bože môj, to je krása!

    My God, how beautiful!

Word by Word: God(voc.) my, that is beauty!

  5. Človeče, čo to zase robíš?

Man, what are you doing again?

Word by Word: Man(voc.), what that again you-do?

  6. Synku, poď na večeru!

    Son, come to dinner!

Word by Word: Son(voc.), come to dinner!

Common Mistakes

  • Making a Czech-style vocative from a name.

    Petre, poď sem!
    Peter, poď sem!

Standard Slovak does not change names when you call someone. Use the nominative: Peter, Jana, Ján.

  • Adding a vocative ending to a title.

    Pane doktore, máte chvíľku?
    Pán doktor, máte chvíľku?

With a title or surname, Slovak uses the nominative: pán doktor, pán Novák. Pane is used on its own.
