záležať na / závisieť od
Depending on
Say Záleží na počasí or Závisí to od počasia: both mean it depends on the weather. Never swap the prepositions: not závisieť na, not záležať od.
How It Works
záležať na + locative: to depend on, to be up to
It is used in the third person singular, usually with no subject: záleží (past záležalo).
- Záleží na tebe. It's up to you.
- Záleží na počasí, či pôjdeme. It depends on the weather whether we go.
záležať + dative + na: to care about, to matter to someone
- Záleží mi na tebe. I care about you.
- Na tom nezáleží. That doesn't matter.
závisieť od + genitive: to depend on
- Závisí to od počasia. It depends on the weather.
- Deti závisia od rodičov. Children depend on their parents.
- Výsledok závisí od toho, ako sa pripravíš. The result depends on how you prepare.
Keep the pairs together. The standard pairs are záležať na and závisieť od. The mixes závisieť na and záležať od are common mistakes, partly because Czech uses záviset na.
A whole clause. Before a question clause, use na tom or od toho: Záleží na tom, kedy prídeš. Závisí to od toho, koľko to stojí.
Forms. After na use the locative (počasie → na počasí, ty → na tebe). After od use the genitive (počasie → od počasia, ty → od teba). More verbs with fixed prepositions are in verbs with fixed prepositions.
