v + Accusative (Days)

Days of the Week

Level 2

Days of the week take v with the accusative: v pondelok, v stredu, vo štvrtok, v sobotu, v nedeľu.

How It Works

DayOn that day
pondelokv pondelok
utorokv utorok
stredav stredu
štvrtokvo štvrtok
piatokv piatok
sobotav sobotu
nedeľav nedeľu

Why these forms. This is the accusative. Inanimate masculine days do not change, and feminine days take -u. Vo before štvrtok follows the rule in prepositions with an extra vowel.

Related time phrases. For every Monday, use no preposition: každý pondelok (see how long and how often). For the weekend, use cez víkend. Times of day can follow the day: v stredu večer (on Wednesday evening).

Months and seasons use different patterns; see months and seasons.

Common Mistakes

  • Using v before štvrtok.

    V štvrtok mám čas.
    Vo štvrtok mám čas.

Štvrtok starts with the group štv, which contains v, so v becomes vo.

  • Using the locative for days.

    Príď v nedeli.
    Príď v nedeľu.

Slovak uses the accusative for days: v nedeľu. The locative form belongs to Czech, not Slovak.

  • Leaving a feminine day in the nominative.

    V sobota ideme von.
    V sobotu ideme von.

Feminine days change -a to -u after v: sobota becomes sobotu.
