једем / једеш
Eating in the Present
The verb јести means "to eat". While its infinitive has an -с-, its present tense stem switches back to јед-: ја једем, ти једеш, он/она/оно једе...
How It Works
The verb јести is an essential imperfective verb describing ongoing or routine eating. Although the stem change from јес- to јед- may initially look irregular, it follows an ancient regular Slavic pattern where underlying dental consonants (d/t) shift to st before the infinitive suffix -ти (compare with плести : плетем).
Key Features:
- Present Endings: Uses standard Class 1 (-е-) suffixes: -ем, -еш, -е, -емо, -ете, -у. Notice especially the 3rd person plural form једу (they eat), which ends in -у, not -еју.
- Negation: Regular negation applies by placing the particle не directly before the verb as a separate word: не једем (I don't eat), не једеш (you don't eat).
- Expressing Desires: When combined with modal verbs like желети or хтети, contemporary Serbian strongly prefers the clause structure да + презент rather than the bare infinitive (e.g., желим да једем rather than хоћу јести).
- Direct Objects: Foods being eaten normally take the accusative case (e.g., једем јабуку — "I am eating an apple").
Examples (4)
- Шта једеш за доручак?
What are you eating for breakfast?
Word by Word: What eat-you for breakfast?
The 2nd person singular form "једеш" is used for an informal question addressed to one person.
- Не једем месо јер сам вегетаријанац.
I don't eat meat because I am a vegetarian.
Word by Word: Not eat-I meat because am-I vegetarian.
Demonstrates the 1st person singular "не једем" with standard verb negation and an accusative object ("месо").
- Они управо једу ручак.
They are eating lunch right now.
Word by Word: They right-now eat-they lunch.
Shows the 3rd person plural ending "-у" in "једу" denoting an ongoing process in the present.
- Ми ретко једемо брзу храну.
We rarely eat fast food.
Word by Word: We rarely eat-we fast food.
Uses the 1st person plural "једемо" to express a general dietary habit.
Common Mistakes
Conjugating based on the infinitive stem rather than the present stem "јед-".
Ја јесем хлеб сваки дан.Ја једем хлеб сваки дан.The infinitive "јести" conceals the root consonant "д". The present tense must always be formed with "јед-" (једем, једеш, једе...).
Adding an incorrect ending like "-еју" to the 3rd person plural.
Они једеју пицу у ресторану.Они једу пицу у ресторану.Verbs in the "-е-" conjugation class take "-у" in the 3rd person plural, giving "једу", never "једеју" or "једе".
Confusing the 3rd person singular "једе" (eats) with "јесте" (is).
Марко јесте јабуку.Марко једе јабуку."Јесте" is the emphatic long present form of "бити" (to be). The 3rd person singular for eating is strictly "једе".
