хајде / хајдемо / хајдете
Inviting Someone to Act
Хајде, хајдемо, and хајдете correspond to English "come on!", "let's...", or "go ahead!". They serve as defective imperative verbs or encouraging particles to suggest an activity or urge someone forward.
How It Works
In Serbian, хајде behaves morphologically as a defective verb restricted to imperative meanings.
1. Major Syntactic Constructions:
- Хајде + да + present tense: The most common way in Serbian to propose a shared activity (e.g., Хајде да попијемо кафу — "Let's have a coffee"). Notice that invariable хајде is standard and stylistically natural even when paired with a plural verb.
- Хајде / хајдете + imperative verb: Acts as an encouraging prelude to an imperative directive (e.g., Хајде уђи! — "Come on, enter!"; Хајдете погледајте! — "Go ahead, take a look!").
- Хајде / хајдемо + motion destination: When movement is obvious, the verb of motion can be elided (e.g., Хајдемо у биоскоп! — "Let's go to the cinema!"; Хајде унутра! — "Get inside!").
2. Clitic Rules:
When using the да construction, object clitics follow standard clitic placement rules and attach directly after да (e.g., Хајде да му кажемо, never *Хајде му да кажемо).
3. Colloquial Variants:
In everyday speech, the initial /h/ is frequently omitted, yielding casual forms like ајде, ајмо, and ајте.

Placing pronominal clitics before 'да'.
