farei/direi/trarei

Futuro Irregular (Fazer/Dizer/Trazer)

Level 3

While most Portuguese verbs use the full infinitive as a base for the future tense, fazer, dizer, and trazer use shortened stems: far-, dir-, and trar-.

How It Works

In Portuguese, the future tense is remarkably regular, with only three exceptions: fazer (to do/make), dizer (to say/tell), and trazer (to bring).

1. The Stems:
Instead of using the full infinitive, you must use these contracted stems:

  • Fazer → far- (e.g., farei)
  • Dizer → dir- (e.g., direi)
  • Trazer → trar- (e.g., trarei)

2. The Endings:
Once you have the irregular stem, you apply the standard future endings used for all verbs:

  • Eu: -ei
  • Tu: -ás
  • Você/Ele/Ela: -á
  • Nós: -emos
  • Vós: -eis
  • Vocês/Eles/Elas: -ão

3. Usage and Register:
This synthetic form (farei) is considered formal. In everyday conversation, especially in Brazil, speakers prefer the Near Future (e.g., vou fazer). However, the synthetic future is standard in writing, news, and literature. It is also used to express conjecture or probability in the present (e.g., "Onde estará ele?" - "I wonder where he is?").

4. Derivatives:
Any verb derived from these three follows the same pattern. For example, desfazer becomes desfarei, and contradizer becomes contradirei.

Examples (5)

  1. Eu farei o jantar para a família amanhã.

I will make dinner for the family tomorrow.

Word by Word: I will-do the dinner for the family tomorrow.

Uses the irregular stem 'far-' for the verb 'fazer'.

  2. Eles dirão a verdade durante o depoimento.

They will tell the truth during the testimony.

Word by Word: They will-say the truth during the testimony.

Uses the irregular stem 'dir-' for the verb 'dizer'.

  3. Nós traremos os livros para a aula na segunda-feira.

We will bring the books to class on Monday.

Word by Word: We will-bring the books for the class on the Monday.

Uses the irregular stem 'trar-' for the verb 'trazer'.

  4. O que dirá o chefe sobre o novo projeto?

What will the boss say about the new project?

Word by Word: The what will-say the boss about the new project?

The third-person singular form 'dirá' is used for 'o chefe'.

  5. Se você precisar, eu refarei o relatório.

If you need, I will redo the report.

Word by Word: If you need, I will-redo the report.

The derivative verb 'refazer' inherits the irregular stem 'far-'.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying regular future rules to these irregular verbs.

    Eu fazerei o trabalho amanhã.
    Eu farei o trabalho amanhã.

Learners often try to attach the ending to the full infinitive (fazer-ei), but these three verbs must use the contracted stems (far-, dir-, trar-).

  • Confusing the future tense with the conditional tense.

    Eu faria isso amanhã.
    Eu farei isso amanhã.

'Faria' is the conditional ('I would do'), while 'farei' is the future ('I will do'). They share the same irregular stem but have different endings.
