Simultaneous Adverbial Participles

Level 5

The simultaneous adverbial participle (e.g., czytając - while reading) links two actions performed by the same person at the same time. It is primarily used in formal or written Polish.

How It Works

The simultaneous adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) is a sophisticated tool for combining sentences.

1. Formation:
Take the 3rd person plural form of the present tense and add -c:

  • czytają (they read) → czytając (reading/while reading)
  • idą (they go) → idąc (going/while going)
  • robią (they do) → robiąc (doing/while doing)
  • być (irregular) → będąc (being)

2. The Golden Rule of Subjects:
The subject of the participle must be the same as the subject of the main verb. If the subjects are different, you must use a conjunction like kiedy or gdy instead.

3. Mandatory Punctuation:
In Polish, an adverbial participle phrase must always be separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. This applies whether the phrase is at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence (e.g., Idąc do pracy, spotkałem Marka.).

4. Usage and Register:
This form is common in literature, news, and formal writing. In casual speech, Poles usually prefer full clauses (e.g., 'Kiedy jadłem...' instead of 'Jedząc...').

5. Negation:
When used with nie, it often translates to 'without -ing' (e.g., nie wiedząc = without knowing).

Examples (5)

  1. Pijąc kawę, czytałem gazetę.

While drinking coffee, I was reading a newspaper.

Word by Word: Drinking coffee, I-read newspaper.

The actions of drinking and reading happen simultaneously. The subject (I) is the same for both.

  2. Nie można rozmawiać, jedząc.

    One cannot talk while eating.

Word by Word: Not possible to-talk, eating.

The participle 'jedząc' describes the background condition during which talking is prohibited.

  3. Będąc w Polsce, odwiedziłem Kraków.

Being in Poland, I visited Krakow.

Word by Word: Being in Poland, I-visited Krakow.

Uses the irregular form 'będąc' from the verb 'być' (to be).

  4. Szedł ulicą, nie patrząc na nikogo.

He walked down the street without looking at anyone.

Word by Word: He-walked street, not looking at no-one.

Negated participles often translate to 'without doing something'.

  5. Myjąc się, śpiewał głośno.

While washing himself, he sang loudly.

Word by Word: Washing self, he-sang loudly.

The reflexive particle 'się' follows the participle.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the participle when the subjects of the two actions are different (Dangling Participle).

Idąc do domu, zaczął padać deszcz.
Gdy szedłem do domu, zaczął padać deszcz.

In the incorrect version, it grammatically implies the rain was walking home. Since the rain and 'I' are different subjects, you must use 'gdy' or 'kiedy'.

  • Trying to form the -ąc participle from a perfective verb.

    Zrobiąc zakupy, wrócił do domu.
    Zrobiwszy zakupy, wrócił do domu.

The -ąc form only works with imperfective verbs for simultaneous actions. For completed actions that happened before, use the anterior participle (-wszy/-łszy).
