Level 2

Więc (so) and dlatego (for that reason) connect a situation with a result or conclusion. Usually one is enough; you may also encounter the combined phrase może więc dlatego (maybe that is why).

How It Works

Connecting a Cause and Result
Use either word in straightforward examples: Zaspałem, więc się spóźniłem or Zaspałem, dlatego się spóźniłem (I overslept, so I was late). Więc also introduces a conclusion drawn from evidence: Nie widzę jego kurtki, więc chyba wyszedł (I cannot see his jacket, so he has probably left). His absent jacket is evidence for the inference, not the cause of his leaving.

Position and Punctuation
Więc can stand within the result clause: Było późno. Wróciliśmy więc do domu (It was late. We therefore returned home). Do not surround an integrated więc with commas. A clause-initial coordinating więc takes the boundary comma: Było późno, więc wróciliśmy do domu. Dlatego commonly begins its clause, but its position is not fixed: Zrobiłem to właśnie dlatego (I did it for precisely that reason).

Using Both Words
Adding both words is often unnecessary in a simple result statement. The combination can express an inference about the explanation: Może więc dlatego nie przyszedł (Maybe that is why he did not come). This is an available meaning, not an exception requiring może before every legitimate combination.

Do Not Reverse the Link
Bo and ponieważ introduce a reason. The phrase dlatego że also means because: Spóźniłem się, dlatego że zaspałem. When dlatego is separately emphasized, the boundary falls before że: Spóźniłem się właśnie dlatego, że zaspałem.

Examples (4)

  1. Zapomniałem portfela, więc nie kupiłem chleba.

I forgot my wallet, so I did not buy bread.

Word by Word: I forgot wallet, so not I-bought bread.

Więc introduces the result after the reason.

  2. Pociąg miał opóźnienie, dlatego spóźniłem się na spotkanie.

The train was delayed, so I was late for the meeting.

Word by Word: Train had delay, for-that-reason I-was-late myself for meeting.

Dlatego points back to the delay as the reason for being late.

  3. Nie odebrał telefonu. Może więc dlatego nie wie o spotkaniu?

He didn't pick up the phone. Maybe that is why he doesn't know about the meeting?

Word by Word: Not he-picked-up phone. Maybe so therefore not he-knows about meeting?

Może więc dlatego presents a possible explanation inferred from the preceding information.

  4. Było bardzo zimno. Zostaliśmy więc w domu.

It was very cold, so that's why we stayed at home.

Word by Word: It-was very cold. We-stayed therefore in home.

Więc occurs inside the second sentence and does not take surrounding commas.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'więc' to introduce a reason instead of a result.

Different MeaningNie zjadłem obiadu, więc nie byłem głodny.
Nie byłem głodny, więc nie zjadłem obiadu.

If the intended reason for not eating is lack of hunger, put that reason first and the result after więc. The reverse sentence is grammatically possible but makes a different causal claim.

  • Confusing 'więc' with 'dlatego że'.

    Different MeaningSpóźniłem się, więc zaspałem.
    Spóźniłem się, dlatego że zaspałem.

'Dlatego że' means 'because'. Use it when the result comes first and the reason follows. Use 'więc' when the reason comes first and the result follows.
