nieść / nosić

Nieść and Nosić

Level 4

Polish distinguishes between carrying something right now in one direction (nieść) and carrying something habitually or wearing it (nosić).

How It Works

In Polish, verbs of motion come in pairs. Unlike the standard aspect system, this distinction happens within the imperfective category. Note that nieść and nosić often describe carrying by hand, on foot, or on one’s person. Their meanings also extend to animals, natural forces and figurative uses. For transporting items by vehicle, you must use the verbs wieźć and wozić.

1. Nieść (Determinate)
Use this when you are physically carrying an object in a specific direction at a specific moment. It is like an arrow pointing toward a destination.

  • Niosę zakupy. (I am carrying the groceries [right now, to the car/house]).

2. Nosić (Indeterminate)
Use this for three main scenarios:

  • Habits: Actions that happen regularly. (Codziennie noszę plecak.)
  • Wearing: This is the standard verb for habitual wearing of clothes, glasses, or jewelry (e.g., Noszę okulary. - I wear glasses). The usual way to say what you have on right now is the phrase mieć na sobie.
  • Multi-directional: Carrying something around without a specific destination, carrying something while pacing (e.g., walking a crying baby around the room).

3. Conjugation and Stem Changes
Both verbs follow standard conjugation patterns in the present tense, but feature important stem changes:

  • Nieść: Follows the -ę, -esz pattern (niosę, niesiesz, niesie, niesiemy, niesiecie, niosą). Note both the o/e vowel change and the s/ś consonant shift (the soft ś sound is spelled si before the vowel e in niesiesz).
  • Nosić: Follows the -ę, -isz pattern (noszę, nosisz, nosi, nosimy, nosicie, noszą). Note the phonetic ś/sz consonant alternation (soft ś in nosisz/nosi vs. hard sz in noszę/noszą).

In the past tense, nieść features important vowel changes: on niósł (he carried), ona niosła (she carried), ono niosło (it carried), oni nieśli (they carried [masculine-personal]), and one niosły (they carried [non-masculine-personal]). Notice how the stem vowel shifts between ó, o, and e, alongside a consonant shift between hard s (niósł, niosła) and soft ś (nieśli). Meanwhile, nosić is completely regular in the past tense (nosił, nosiła, nosili, etc.).

4. Adding Prefixes
When you add directional prefixes to these verbs, they form standard aspect pairs. Adding a prefix to the determinate verb (nieść) creates a perfective verb, while adding it to the indeterminate verb (nosić) creates an imperfective verb. For example, przynieść (perfective) and przynosić (imperfective) both mean 'to bring'.

Beyond Carrying by Hand: Pies niesie patyk (The dog is carrying a stick) and Wiatr niesie dym (The wind is carrying smoke) show nonhuman subjects. Nosić also appears in nosić imię (to bear a name) and nosić rozmiar czterdzieści (to wear size forty). The hand-versus-vehicle contrast is a practical motion distinction, not the complete definition of these verbs.

Examples (5)

  1. Niosę ten ciężki karton do twojego pokoju.

I am carrying this heavy box to your room.

Word by Word: I-am-carrying this heavy box to your room.

Uses 'nieść' because it is a specific, one-way action happening right now.

  2. On zawsze nosi czarną kurtkę, nawet w lecie.

He always wears a black jacket, even in summer.

Word by Word: He always wears black jacket, even in summer.

'Nosić' is the standard verb for wearing clothes habitually.

  3. Czy możesz mi pomóc nieść te torby?

Can you help me carry these bags?

Word by Word: Can you to-me help to-carry these bags?

We use the infinitive 'nieść' because we are talking about a specific trip with the bags.

  4. Mój tata nosi brodę od dziesięciu lat.

My dad has been wearing (sporting) a beard for ten years.

Word by Word: My dad wears beard since ten years.

'Nosić' is used for physical features like beards or long hair.

  5. Niósł kwiaty, kiedy ją zobaczył.

He was carrying flowers when he saw her.

Word by Word: He-carried flowers, when her he-saw.

This uses the masculine past form of 'nieść' (niósł) for a specific moment in the past.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'nieść' to mean 'wearing' clothes.

    Different MeaningNiosę dzisiaj nową koszulę.
Mam dzisiaj na sobie nową koszulę.

If you say 'niosę', it sounds like you are holding the shirt in your hands while walking. The usual way to say what you have on right now is 'mieć na sobie'. The verb 'nosić' is used for regular wearing (like 'I wear glasses') and can also describe what someone wore on a given day.

  • Using 'nieść' for transport by vehicle.

Niosę samochodem meble do nowego domu.
Wiozę samochodem meble do nowego domu.

For the explicit transport-by-car meaning in this example, use wieźć or wozić. Nieść/nosić have other literal and figurative uses too.

  • Forming the compound future with perfective zanieść.

    Będę zanieść to na pocztę.
    Zaniosę to na pocztę.

Zanieść forms its own perfective future. Jutro niosę to na pocztę can be a grammatical present-tense plan; it is not inherently an error.
