Neuter Nouns In -Um
Polish neuter nouns ending in -um (like muzeum) never change their form in the singular, but they decline like regular neuter nouns in the plural.
How It Works
Nouns in this category represent academic, technical, or institutional concepts of Latin origin. While they are grammatically neuter, they follow a 'split' declension rule.
1. The Singular (Invariable)
Regardless of the case required by a verb or preposition, the word remains exactly as it appears in the dictionary. For example, with the word centrum:
- Nominative: To jest centrum.
- Genitive: Idę do centrum.
- Locative: Jestem w centrum.
2. The Plural (Declinable)
In the plural, these nouns behave like standard neuter nouns, but you must first drop the -um suffix. If the word ends in -ium or -jum, keep the i or j in the stem (e.g., gimnazjum becomes gimnazja). The endings are:
- Nominative/Accusative: -a (muzea, laboratoria)
- Genitive: -ów (muzeów) — Note: This uses the masculine-style ending!
- Dative: -om (muzeom)
- Instrumental: -ami (muzeami)
- Locative: -ach (muzeach)
3. Adjective Agreement
Even though the noun doesn't change in the singular, any accompanying adjectives must still decline to show the correct case. For example: w starym muzeum (in the old museum) uses the locative adjective form even though muzeum stays the same.
4. Neuter vs. Masculine -um
Be careful: this rule only applies to neuter nouns. Some masculine nouns also end in -um (like album, kostium, or rozum). These are not Latin-style neuters and do decline in the singular: Nie mam albumu (I don't have the album) or Szukam kostiumu (I'm looking for a costume).
Examples (5)
- To muzeum jest zamknięte w poniedziałki.
This museum is closed on Mondays.
Word by Word: This museum is closed in Mondays.
Here, 'muzeum' is in the nominative singular form.
- Spotkamy się w centrum miasta.
We will meet in the city center.
Word by Word: We will meet in center (of) city.
Even though 'w' requires the locative case, 'centrum' remains unchanged in the singular.
- W Warszawie jest wiele pięknych muzeów.
There are many beautiful museums in Warsaw.
Word by Word: In Warsaw is many beautiful museums.
In the plural genitive, the -um is dropped and replaced with -ów.
- Interesuję się nowymi mediami.
I am interested in new media.
Word by Word: I interest myself (with) new media.
The word 'media' is the plural form of 'medium'. Here it uses the instrumental plural ending -ami.
- Rozmawialiśmy o różnych stadiach projektu.
We talked about different stages of the project.
Word by Word: We talked about different stages (of) project.
The locative plural of 'stadium' is 'stadiach'.
Common Mistakes
Declining the noun in the singular.
Idę do muzea.Idę do muzeum.Learners often try to apply neuter singular endings (like -a for genitive). However, neuter -um nouns never change in the singular.
Using the wrong genitive plural ending.
Nie ma tu żadnych muze.Nie ma tu żadnych muzeów.Most neuter nouns use a 'zero ending' in the genitive plural, but -um nouns specifically require the -ów ending.
Treating the noun as masculine.
Ten muzeum jest duży.To muzeum jest duże.Because they end in a consonant sound, learners mistake them for masculine. They are neuter, so adjectives must use neuter endings.

- Genitive Plural Endings
-Um nouns are unique because they use the masculine -ów ending in the genitive plural.
Level 2 - Locative Case
A common case where learners mistakenly try to decline -um nouns in the singular (e.g., saying 'w muzeumie' instead of 'w muzeum').
Level 1 - Adjective Agreement
Adjectives must still decline to match the intended case of the -um noun, even if the noun itself doesn't change.
