Instrumental Means

Level 2

The Instrumental Means pattern identifies the 'how' of an action. It answers the question Czym? (With what? / By what means?). In Polish, you do not use a preposition like 'with' or 'by' for this; you simply change the ending of the noun.

How It Works

The instrumental case functions as the 'tool' case in Polish. It is used in three primary ways for inanimate objects:

  • Physical Tools: The object you hold to do something (e.g., nożem - with a knife).
  • Means of Transport: The vehicle you use to travel (e.g., autobusem - by bus).
  • Methods of Payment/Communication: How you complete a transaction (e.g., kartą - by card).

Important Note: This usage is restricted to objects. If you are doing something through a person (an intermediary), you must use przez + accusative instead of the bare instrumental.

Morphology (Endings):
To form the instrumental, you must apply instrumental endings to the noun and instrumental endings to any describing adjectives.

Singular Nouns:

  • Masculine/Neuter: Most take -em (nożem, oknem). However, if the stem ends in k or g, the ending becomes -iem (pociągiem, okiem).
  • Feminine: Always -ą. This applies to nouns ending in -a (łyżką) as well as those ending in a consonant (nocą - by night).

Plural Nouns:

  • All Genders: Usually -ami (długopisami, autobusami).

Adjectives:

  • Masculine/Neuter Singular: -ym/-im (nowym, tanim).
  • Feminine Singular: -ą (nową).
  • Plural: -ymi/-imi (nowymi).

Examples (5)

  1. Piszę nowym długopisem.

I am writing with a new pen.

Word by Word: I-write new pen.

The pen is the tool. Both the adjective 'nowym' and the noun 'długopisem' are in the instrumental case.

  2. Jadę do Krakowa pociągiem.

I am going to Krakow by train.

Word by Word: I-go to Krakow train.

The train is the means of transport. Note that no preposition like 'by' is used.

  3. Kroję chleb ostrym nożem.

I am cutting the bread with a sharp knife.

Word by Word: I-cut bread sharp knife.

The knife is the physical instrument used for the action.

  4. Płacę za kawę kartą.

I am paying for the coffee by card.

Word by Word: I-pay for coffee card.

The card is the method/means of payment.

  5. Latamy do Polski samolotami.

We fly to Poland by planes.

Word by Word: We-fly to Poland planes.

This shows the plural instrumental ending '-ami' for a means of transport.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the preposition 'z' (with) for tools.

    Piszę z długopisem.
    Piszę długopisem.

'Z' + instrumental means accompaniment (together with). 'Piszę z długopisem' sounds like you and the pen are writing something together as partners.

  • Confusing the feminine instrumental '-ą' with the accusative '-ę'.

    Jadę taksówkę.
    Jadę taksówką.

The accusative '-ę' is for direct objects. For means of transport, you must use the instrumental '-ą'.

  • Using the bare instrumental for human intermediaries.

    Wysłałem to kolegą.
    Wysłałem to przez kolegę.

The bare instrumental is usually used for tools, vehicles and services (kurierem, pocztą). For an ordinary person who helps as an intermediary, as in 'via a friend', use przez + accusative.
