dzięki + Dative
Dzięki with the Dative
The preposition dzięki means "thanks to." It is used to describe a cause that led to a positive or successful result and always requires the dative case.
How It Works
In Polish, expressing 'why' something happened depends on the outcome. Dzięki is your go-to word for positive reasons.
1. Case Government
The most important rule is that dzięki always governs the dative case. This means nouns, pronouns, and adjectives following it must change their endings to the dative forms.
- Noun: mama → dzięki mamie (thanks to mom)
- Pronoun: ty → dzięki tobie (thanks to you)
- Adjective: dobra pogoda → dzięki dobrej pogodzie (thanks to good weather)
2. Positive Nuance vs. Negative
Use dzięki when the result is good. If the result is bad (e.g., 'because of the rain, I am sick'), use przez instead. Using dzięki for a disaster makes you sound like you are being ironic.
3. Connecting to Actions
If you want to say 'thanks to the fact that [verb]', you cannot just say dzięki że. You must use the bridge phrase dzięki temu, że.... The word temu is the dative form of to (this/that), satisfying the grammatical requirement of the preposition.
Examples (4)
- Dzięki tobie wszystko się udało.
Thanks to you, everything worked out.
Word by Word: Thanks to-you everything itself succeeded.
Uses the dative pronoun 'tobie' to show the person responsible for the success.
- Znaleźliśmy drogę dzięki mapie.
We found the way thanks to the map.
Word by Word: We-found way thanks to-map.
'Mapie' is the dative form of 'mapa'. It shows that an object can also be the cause.
- Dzięki temu, że wcześnie wstaliśmy, nie było korków.
Thanks to the fact that we got up early, there was no traffic.
Word by Word: Thanks to-that, that early we-got-up, not there-was traffic-jams.
Uses 'dzięki temu, że' to link the preposition to a full clause (wstaliśmy).
- Wyzdrowiał dzięki nowoczesnej medycynie.
He recovered thanks to modern medicine.
Word by Word: He-recovered thanks to-modern medicine.
Shows adjective agreement in the dative: 'nowoczesnej medycynie'.
Common Mistakes
Using the Genitive or Accusative case instead of Dative.
Dzięki ciebie jestem szczęśliwy.Dzięki tobie jestem szczęśliwy.'Ciebie' is Genitive/Accusative. 'Dzięki' must always be followed by the Dative form 'tobie'.
Using 'dzięki' for negative outcomes (without irony).
Dzięki wypadkowi spóźniłem się.Przez wypadek spóźniłem się.Since an accident (wypadek) is negative, 'przez' is the correct preposition. Using 'dzięki' here sounds like you are glad the accident happened.
Using 'dzięki, że' for 'thanks to the fact that'.
Different MeaningDzięki, że pomogłeś, skończyłem pracę.Dzięki temu, że pomogłeś, skończyłem pracę.Dzięki, że pomogłeś is good Polish and means 'Thanks for helping'. To say 'thanks to the fact that you helped' and link it to a result, use 'dzięki temu, że': Dzięki temu, że pomogłeś, skończyłem pracę.
