A Noun With یک
یک کتاب can mean a book or one book. Persian does not require یک before every singular noun.
How It Works
Introduce something new. یک کتاب خریدم means “I bought a book.” The listener has not necessarily been told which book. The phrase can also emphasize one book if the context contrasts it with two or more.
Do not supply an obligatory English article. کتاب خریدم can naturally mean “I bought a book” or “I bought books,” depending on context and the intended focus on buying books. A bare Persian noun does not mechanically map to one English article.
In everyday Iranian, یه کتاب خریدم is a common casual way to introduce a book. یه is a spoken register form; retain یک in written-standard examples.
A noun can combine یک and the indefinite ending ـی, as in یک کتابی, but that combination has its own context and emphasis. Start with the simpler pattern instead of treating two markers as mandatory.
