ki + destination
Going to a Place
Ki introduces the place an action is directed toward.
How It Works
Ki te toa gives the destination of haere: to the shop. A place name can follow directly, as in ki Rotorua.
A personal recipient is introduced by the personal construction ki a, for example ki a Mere. Do not add a definite article merely because English says the, and do not remove the personal article from a name treated as a person.
Examples (3)
- Kei te haere au ki te toa.
I am going to the shop.
- Ka haere a Mere ki Rotorua.
Mere will go to Rotorua.
- Haere ki te kura.
Go to school.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Introduce ki as the destination or goal phrase accompanying an action. Compare ki te toa with ki Rotorua, retaining the marking appropriate to each kind of place rather than deriving articles from English translation.
