There Is or Are with Ada

Level 1

In Malay, the word ada is used to express existence. It is the equivalent of the English phrases 'there is' or 'there are'.

How It Works

The ada existential pattern is one of the most frequent structures in Malay. It serves to introduce the presence of an object or person.

1. Basic Structure (There is/are)
To introduce something new (indefinite), the standard word order is:
Ada + [Noun] + [Location]
Example: Ada kucing di sini. (There is a cat here.)

2. Negation
To say 'there is not', you have two main options:
• Tiada: The formal contraction of tidak + ada. Used in writing and formal speech.
• Tak ada: The common conversational form (often shortened further to takde).

3. Possession (To Have)
The word ada also expresses possession. When a person or subject comes first, the meaning changes:
• Ada kucing = There is a cat.
• Saya ada kucing = I have a cat.

4. Definite Nouns (Location)
If you are talking about a specific, known object (e.g., 'The cat'), the word ada is optional. You can say Kucing itu di dapur or Kucing itu ada di dapur. Including ada adds emphasis to the fact that the object is actually there.

5. Auxiliary Function
While this guide focuses on existence and possession, you may occasionally see ada used before a verb in certain contexts to emphasize a state or that an action is indeed occurring. However, for Level 1, focus on its use for 'there is' and 'to have'.

6. Register
In formal speech (Baku), it is pronounced 'ah-dah'. In casual Malaysian Malay, the final 'a' often sounds like a schwa (like the 'a' in 'sofa'), sounding like 'ah-dĕ'.

Examples (6)

  1. Ada banyak orang di pasar.

There are many people at the market.

Word by Word: Exist many people at market.

Here, 'ada' introduces the existence of 'many people' (banyak orang) at a location.

  2. Ada sebuah buku di atas meja.

There is a book on the table.

Word by Word: Exist one-unit book at top table.

This shows a single object's presence using the classifier 'sebuah'.

  3. Tiada air dalam botol ini.

There is no water in this bottle.

Word by Word: Not-exist water inside bottle this.

'Tiada' is the formal contraction of 'tidak ada', used to mean 'there is not'.

  4. Saya ada kucing.

    I have a cat.

Word by Word: I exist cat.

When a subject (saya) is placed before 'ada', the meaning shifts from 'there is' to 'to have'.

  5. Kucing itu ada di bawah meja.

The cat is under the table.

Word by Word: Cat that exist at bottom table.

When the noun is definite (kucing itu), 'ada' is optional. You can also say 'Kucing itu di bawah meja'. Including 'ada' emphasizes the cat's presence.

  6. Ada masalah?

    Is there a problem?

    Word by Word: Exist problem?

By using rising intonation, 'ada' can be used to ask if something exists.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'ada' as a linking verb for adjectives (like 'is').

    Dia ada sangat gembira.
    Dia sangat gembira.

Malay does not use 'ada' to link a subject to an adjective. You should use the adjective directly after the subject.

  • Using 'ada' to mean 'am' with a noun.

    Different MeaningSaya ada seorang pelajar.
    Saya seorang pelajar.

'Saya ada seorang pelajar' is a good sentence meaning 'I have a student'. To say 'I am a student', use 'Saya seorang pelajar' (or 'Saya ialah seorang pelajar' in formal Malay).

  • Adding a dummy subject like 'itu' to mean 'there'.

    Itu ada kucing di sana.
    Ada kucing di sana.

In English, 'there' is a placeholder. In Malay, 'ada' already performs the function of introducing the subject, so 'itu' (that) is redundant and incorrect here.
