Formal Endpoint with Hingga

Level 3

Hingga means "until," "up to," or "as far as." It is the formal standard for marking a specific boundary or cut-off point.

How It Works

Hingga functions as a functional marker to indicate a terminal point. It is used in three primary ways:

  • Time: Marking the end of a duration (e.g., from morning until night).
  • Spatial/Limit: Marking a physical boundary (e.g., as far as that point).
  • Rank/Degree: Marking a level of achievement or status (e.g., up to university level).

Unlike sampai, which can also act as a verb meaning "to arrive," hingga is strictly a preposition or conjunction. In formal grammar, it should not be combined with the preposition ke (avoiding hingga ke), as both words serve similar prepositional functions and their combination is considered redundant (lewah).

Examples (4)

  1. Pegawai itu bertugas dari pagi hingga malam.

The officer was on duty from morning until night.

Word by Word: Officer that on-duty from morning until night.

Here, hingga marks the temporal limit of the work shift.

  2. Dia belajar hingga peringkat universiti.

He studied up to the university level.

Word by Word: He study until level university.

In this context, hingga indicates the highest degree or rank achieved.

  3. Perbincangan itu terhenti hingga situ sahaja.

The discussion stopped as far as that point only.

Word by Word: Discussion that stopped until there only.

Hingga is used here to mark a spatial or conceptual limit.

  4. Hujan lebat berterusan hingga waktu subuh.

    Heavy rain continued until dawn.

Word by Word: Rain heavy continue until time dawn.

A formal way to describe a time boundary in a report or news context.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'hingga ke' (redundancy).

Dia berjalan hingga ke hujung jalan.
    Dia berjalan hingga hujung jalan.

In formal Malay, using both 'hingga' and 'ke' together is considered redundant because both are prepositions marking direction/limit. Use one or the other.

  • Using 'hingga' as a verb meaning 'to arrive'.

    Saya sudah hingga di rumah.
    Saya sudah sampai di rumah.

Unlike 'sampai', 'hingga' cannot be used as a verb. To say 'arrive', you must use 'sampai' or 'tiba'.

Learn This First

To understand 'hingga', learners should first be familiar with the basic preposition 'sampai', which serves the same function in everyday speech. Additionally, knowledge of 'dari' (from) is helpful as 'hingga' often appears as the second half of a range expression.
