Even with Bahkan

Level 4

Use bahkan to say "even," "in fact," or "moreover" when you want to escalate a point or add a surprising detail.

How It Works

In formal Malay, bahkan serves two primary roles:

1. As a Coordinating Conjunction: It links two clauses where the second clause provides more extreme information than the first. It is often paired with bukan sahaja to form the correlative structure bukan sahaja... bahkan juga (not only... but even/also).

2. As a Discourse Marker: It can appear at the start of a sentence to intensify a point made in the preceding sentence. In this context, it functions like "Moreover" or "In fact."

Key Characteristics:

  • Register: It is strictly formal (Bahasa Melayu Baku). You will see it in news, academic papers, and literature, but rarely in casual conversation.
  • Intensity: Unlike dan (and), which simply adds information, bahkan signals that the next piece of information is more significant or surprising.
  • Placement: It can precede nouns, adjectives, verbs, or entire clauses.

Examples (4)

  1. Dia bukan sahaja bijak, bahkan juga sangat rendah diri.

He is not only clever, but even very humble.

Word by Word: He not only clever, even also very low self (humble).

This uses the correlative 'bukan sahaja... bahkan juga' to emphasize that his humility is as noteworthy as his intelligence.

  2. Penyakit itu boleh menjejaskan kesihatan, bahkan boleh membawa maut.

The disease can affect health, in fact it can even lead to death.

Word by Word: Disease that can affect health, even can bring death.

Here, 'bahkan' introduces a more extreme consequence (death) compared to the first clause (affecting health).

  3. Beliau tidak pernah berputus asa. Bahkan, beliau semakin bersemangat untuk berjaya.

He never gave up. Moreover, he became even more determined to succeed.

Word by Word: He not ever give up. Even, he more-and-more have-spirit for succeed.

In this example, 'bahkan' starts the sentence to intensify the description of the subject's determination.

  4. Bukan sahaja harta benda yang musnah, bahkan nyawa juga terancam.

Not only was property destroyed, but even lives were at risk.

Word by Word: Not only property thing that destroyed, even life also threatened.

This demonstrates 'bahkan' linking two noun phrases to show an escalation from material loss to loss of life.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'bahkan' in casual conversation.

Aku lapar sangat, bahkan aku boleh makan dua pinggan nasi!
Aku lapar sangat, sampai boleh makan dua pinggan nasi!

Using 'bahkan' in a casual setting sounds overly stiff or 'bookish.' In daily speech, speakers prefer 'sampai' (until/to the point) or 'malah' for emphasis.

  • Mixing up 'bahkan' (even, in fact) with 'bukan' (is not).

    Different MeaningDia bahkan guru saya.
    Dia bukan guru saya.

'Dia bahkan guru saya' is a good sentence meaning 'He is even my teacher'. 'Bukan' is the negator for nouns ('is not'), so 'Dia bukan guru saya' says he is not my teacher.

  • Using 'bahkan' when plain 'pun' is the everyday choice.

    Different MeaningBahkan saya tahu jawapannya.
    Saya pun tahu jawapannya.

'Bahkan saya tahu jawapannya' is correct but sounds formal and bookish. In everyday Malay, 'Saya pun tahu jawapannya' is the usual way to say 'Even I know the answer'.

Learn This First

To understand 'bahkan' (even/moreover), learners should already be comfortable with basic additive connectors like 'juga' and 'dan'. It is also helpful to understand how Malay handles contrast and unexpected information using 'malah', as 'bahkan' serves to intensify a statement by adding a surprising or extreme element to a sequence of ideas.
