däin / deng
Your (Informal): Däin and Deng
Däin or däi goes with masculine and neuter nouns, and deng with feminine nouns and plurals: däi Papp, deng Mamm.
How It Works
If you know mäin and meng, you already know däin and deng. Just swap the m for a d:
- Masculine: däi Papp, däin Handy
- Neuter: däi Kand, däin Haus
- Feminine: deng Schwëster, deng Mamm
- Plural: deng Frënn, deng Kanner
Däin or däi? By the n-rule, keep the n before a vowel and before d, h, n, t and z, and drop it before other consonants: däin Auto, but däi Vëlo.
Which "you"? Däin and deng go with du: family, friends, children and people your age in relaxed settings. When you say Dir to someone, use Ären, Är and Äert instead: Ären Numm (your name). For a group of friends, use the small forms ären, är and äert. See ären, är and äert and Du or Dir?
